I would not be surprised if DeSantis pulled a Wendell Anderson and appointed HIMSELF to the seat.

Anderson was MN governor when Walter Mondale was elected VP. He resigned, the new Governor appointed him to the Senate, and Anderson lost the election in 1978 to a Republican.
