I am torn between Democrats should be doing harm mitigation and Democrats should let the public take their medicine and rebuild the constitutional order if it all goes to shit.

Why should anyone in, say, California have any desire to rebuild the constitutional order? If things collapse so completely that we're basically starting from scratch, I doubt there will be a United States of America. (And good riddance, frankly.)
I am leaning towards the latter. For decades, people have gotten to vote their bigotry while knowing someone would step in to shield them from the worst consequences. No more. It's time to pay the piper.
We’re likely going to have to consider a Truth & Reconciliation-like process to lay bare the lies, the crimes, and the harm with accountability assigned to those responsible.
I’m think anyone who is able to do any sort of harm mitigation - especially our elected officials at all levels - has a duty to push back. It’s not worth the risk to our democracy.
There comes a point in time where you have to just stand back and let people see for themselves. Many times, a person will not listen, until they begin to listen with their eyes.
The WWE/TMZ/Techno/DraftKings/Crypto crowd is running things for awhile.
Perhaps let them learn the hard what comes from voting for a casino mob boss to run the country & free world.
And don't forgot to try the buffet maga when y'all crap out.
These things are not mutually exclusive. There will be policy implemented that is harmful, but totally constitutional. There will be policy implemented that, on a policy level, is harmless, but erodes the constitutional order. Focus your efforts on fighting the latter.
It does, and also, I think there are multiple levels of harm mitigation. There's "Y2K ended up not being a big deal because everyone worked long hours to prep for it" mitigation, and there's "helping with the underground railroad" or "sheltering Jews from nazis" mitigation
having said all that, I remember reading that various people 2016-2020 convinced themselves that it was worth working in the Trump administration so they could do their best to do the former kind of mitigation, and they regret that now
I do continue to feel, though, that if no one points out just what's happening, the harm the GOP is causing, to the ignorant masses who didn't take this seriously last election, they aren't going to actually see it
We can discuss in more depth some time, but I think the answer is "an incredibly large amount, assuming, at the other end, there remains a broad desire to repair it."
Essentially anything in the Constitutuonal order can be fixed if we want, the real damage is to how much we want that order.
We have to stop fixing their mistakes. We’re not their hover parents. Let them feel the pain of their choices. Maybe this is where the arc will bend towards justice.
As much as they are children, this is not a parent-child dynamic. This is every group project where you've been saddled with doing the actual work to complete, except the students slacking off are now dictating which projects they get to continue slacking off on.
Can you really count on the public to not only recognize harm but to be appropriately outraged? Those with their lips planted firmly on his ass are frequently blinded by spray tan chemicals.
The "let it burn" mentality allows an awful lot of people to die. Literally. Including me. Please continue to fight for those of us who didn't vote for or advocate for this. ❤️
They should attempt harm mitigation by opposing any and everything. They will lose most of these fights, the public will get their medicine, and at least they can present themselves as part of the solution.
