We need to be screaming about the energy usage of AI engines from our whole heart. Testing it out, making weird art “just to see”, heck even using “AI search engine results” are a MASSIVE energy drain.

That it is massively draining energy is no surprise.
It is due to the way it works.
This isn't true (costs will remain devastating) but the thermodynamics/information theory of why is opaque. More work needs to be done both in science teaching and comms to overcome this.
Shills for these technologies present as though they believe this but as you say, absolutely not the case.
Right now my go-to simplification is that information processing requires energy just like a heat pump does, except it pumps entropy and heat instead of just heat.
I wish I had a better explanation, this one sucks.
It requires a plagiarism machine a lot of extra time and effort to make something worse than what a college student could do with a hangover.
But I also want people to see the tailpipe and the exhaust.
