Isn't this all because he misunderstands what a trade deficit is and thinks our trading partners are screwing us?
Like the rich chuds think he'll use it and get rid of taxes. The rest is just him being a 78 year old man unwilling to learn when he's wrong and not accepting explanations or no's.
Yes. And he *genuinely* believes a tariff is something that the foreign country pays, not us. That's one concept nobody seems ever to have been able to shake him of—so his handlers decided to weaponize that to create wars for fun.
I think his handlers didn't think he would do it.
To the last minute they thought the tariff thing has same epistemological and ontological status "helping famoolees" has ("made up nonsense to scam the rubes")
By "his handlers" I mean Vance, Elmo, and Thiel, who actively want to see international relations shot to hell—not Bezos and other hitherto pro-Trump CEOs whose only goal is less-regulated business.
Business barely matters if your piggish leader cuts off or impoverishes your markets.
It’s my impression that Musk is sick of Tesla (AND SpaceX) and doesn’t “want out” as much as he found a new shiny thing to keep his attention—political power and global dominance in the NWO.
It’s been long enough, I think he’s realized he can’t actually fix Tesla or get to Mars.
Although the rich chuds don’t actually think he’ll use it, which is why every Wall Street firm hasn’t actually priced it in. They always assumed it was a “negotiating tactic.”
It certainly distracts from the chaos that is going on in the treasury dept, FBI, NIH, etc.
The DOGE clusterf#ck alone should have people sleepless with worry 😟
I think he knows how tariffs work. He also knows that if he manufactures a crisis that he has the power to solve then he can take a self congratulatory victory lap and tell everyone how he subjugated the other countries.
A conspiratorial explanation is creating a *giant* market reset that insiders can profit from on both ends - massive shorts ahead of actual announcement of imposing tariffs, followed by re-buying when Trump calls them off. Win-win.
Yes - no one I know wants any acrimony with or tariffs against Canada. NO ONE. It’s so bad and weird and just wrong. Trump is screwing our country and Canada in this for no discernible reason.
I feel like ten years ago the talk about tariffs was mostly tariffs on everyone or tariffs specifically on China? Although I also remember taxing wood in like 2017 so maybe I'm just misremembering the vibes
Yeah but it is weird that we're starting off with high tariffs on allied countries that are also our largest trading partners and not one that he can consider an enemy that we're punishing with tariffs
Some of this is elderly stubbornness and cognitive decline. He got the idea of tariffs ages ago - the media was so impressed with his mention of the Tariff of Abominations back in 2016 - and now he won't let go of the idea, bolstered by a handful of dipshit billionaires who are just as dumb as he is

To learn, you have to acknowledge when you got something wrong. He is literally incapable of doing so.
