IIRC, Theophite's theory is that the NYT like other media lauded Trump first for clicks and drama in 2016 but made a sincere rightward ideological pivot as a response to MeToo, BLM, and growing worker power under Biden and I think he's right

Genuinely horrifying to me that a large part of this is just gross pettiness - Biden's admin didn't provide circuses and also NYT leadership hates their liberal readership/workers and finds them annoying, so it's ok to cheer on the ending of democracy.
