“A republic, if you can keep it.” -Ben Franklin (probably), 238 years ago

I’m curious if Roberts genuinely thought that Trump would comply with his 9-0 decision. Because John Roberts’ level of credulity is going to determine a lot of outcomes in the very near future.

“.. Notably, this announcement was not made by Trump himself .. but was instead posted to the US Customs and Border Protection Website, suggesting the president isn’t keen to advertise what amounts to his second major tariff retreat in just a few days.” - Vital Knowledge

Looks like the Trump position is that if they send you to the El Salvador jail it’s a one way trip. Remember they are weighing this for citizens.

A story in three parts.

Zero. Zero days before he exempted phones, chips, computers and other tech.

I just want to tip my hat to the crack team of White House economists who were able to discover--in just a few short days--that the U.S. is dependent on China for smartphones, computers and semiconductors.

I’ll take the under

Olivier Blanchard: The idea behind Mar a Lago Accord was to make US$ less attractive. No need for an accord anymore. The markets are doing it all on their own. (Yes, with a more likely recession, higher interest rates, and a higher likelihood of a fiscal crisis, but, hey, nothing is perfect…).

This whole thing from @josephpolitano.bsky.social Once again - this is the stupidest possible way to run the world’s most important (for now) economy. open.substack.com/pub/apricita...

There is no plan.

At least we can still laugh. 🤡

As a commenter points out: So far…

"No one man should have all that power. But there is an obvious solution..." www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

And graft

It is The. Stupidest. Way. To run an economy

A helpful guide to the current state of US trade policy:

“.. Furniture producers in China have seen a complete halt in orders from U.S. importers, and we’re hearing the same across toys, apparel, footwear, and sports equipment. .. Almost everything is on hold as it relates to China business.” @loriannlarocco.bsky.social www.cnbc.com/2025/04/12/t...

I like how the first thing they think of when they think “impeachable offenses” is trade policy

Whenever you write something like this it should be antisemitism in quotes at bare minimum or in some form making clear that they’re aren’t actually cracking down on antisemitism

The entire tariff regime is an invitation to corruption and cronyism.

If you fill your military leadership with people who are either ignorant of the kinds of diverse literature purged here, ok with the purge, or, worse, excited by it… you are going to get a very specific kind of US military leadership and it does not resemble l the side that won the Civil War.

Why aren't more law firms concerned that they'll lose future clients, along with talented applicants, by folding in the face of govt threats? If they won't stand up for themselves, how can anyone think they'd stand up for clients? Even if they lack ethics or integrity, that seems bad for business.

Once not an issue, the fate of the us economy, the dollar and the bond market may now wrest on Congress taking away Trump’s power to tariff. You’ve got to keep the matches away from the kid.

The dream is dead

Gasparino has become a must-follow for me as the voice of Wall Street guys who want Trump to succeed, which I believe is an important part of his coalition:

Repeat after me - there is no plan. The entire global economy hangs on the whims of one guy. Also, Howard Lutnick promised me all those millions of jobs screwing tiny screws into iPhones were coming back to the United States.

Cowards, the lot of them.

Long dive into the inflation shock from the tariffs, how the Federal Reserve is likely to approach it, and the two main reasons it's likely to stay tighter for longer. mikekonczal.substack.com/p/the-federa...

This, for the love of Pete, this

By appeasing Trump, law firms are allowing him to rewrite history by creating false impressions of election misconduct and illegal hiring practices. My thoughts in @MSNBCDaily www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...

You gotta pay attention, but this is really good. h/t @neilirwin.bsky.social “Any country other than the US precipitously raising and lowering tariffs, gutting its Internal Revenue Service and nonchalantly considering territorial grabs would have seen smoking-hot capital flight months ago.”

Genuinely the stupidest timeline.

Preserve, protect, and defend…sorry, what is it now? Oh right.

It's small potatoes in the scheme of things but not sure it makes any sense for legal reporters to ask lawyers at firms that have caved to Trump for any expert analysis on litigation involving the administration.

But it's not the inability of institutions. It's the learned helplessness of Congressional Republicans.

A @radiofreetom.bsky.social thread if ever there was one

Does anyone else remember all those times Elon Musk condemned the government for having Twitter do its bidding?

(AFP) - The mighty dollar is sliding sharply as President Donald Trump's turbulent trade agenda has battered US credibility in global markets and fanned fears of a self-inflicted economic downturn. finance.yahoo.com/news/trumps-...

Excellent 🧵

Welp, got an answer to this question: Apparently the answer is no tariffs are being collected. Trump broke the system www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/c...

Mortgage rates surge over 7% as tariffs hit bond market www.cnbc.com/2025/04/11/m...

Agree. But so-called isn’t going to do it either. Elon Musk and his operatives is my go-to

NY Fed's Williams joins with colleagues and says Trump trade policy creating huge uncertainty, will drive up inflation and unemployment while weighing on growth. Says Fed well positioned to navigate landscape.
