How is it otherwise? I feel like it's a tough movie to remake and I'm not sure why they would even attempt unless they had an angle on it.

yeah, 'unnecessary' is the word.
the OG is a v serviceable B-movie, but this remake just sucks so much life out w/ Dalton's ponderous back story.
but worse, the fight scenes were pretty meh? shonky editing + cam movement draws attention *away* from the combat, robbing it of thrill factor.

This wasn't really a remake of the original. It would be like naming the bar Ghost and using that as a pretense for calling it a Ghost remake.

Also Conor McGregor took it from a dumb but tolerable action movie to nearly unwatchable whenever he was on screen.

The OG had some greats working on it. Dean Cundey as doc, Benny the Jet doing stunt training, Jeff Healey adding original tunes.

It's also a weird commercial for the Florida Keys. Why do I know that conch chowder is a specialty of the Keys? Because the movie paused the plot to tell me that. The part where Dalton and Ellie have drinks on a sandbank is a tourist TV spot. There's constant talk about how beautiful the Keys are.
