No problem renewing a long expired one, too expired to do online, went in person, take copious copies like the state dept passport website instructions say. If you have your former expired book, it helps. Long lines. Took about a month, non-expedited.
I went in to renew mine on March 12th (it was waaay expired and still in my maiden name). Got an email that it was received on March 20th, and that normal processing is 4-6 weeks from that date. So now I wait.
Beginning May 7 you must have a RealID to fly in the USA. You can only make an appt 3 mos before it expires. Mine expires May 16. I call for an appt. First available is May 12. And you still have to wait for the ID in the mail. I leave for my 50th birthday cruise 5/10! Thank God I have a passport!
Just applied for a new passport as old one is long expired. So had to start process from scratch. I'm in Palm Springs, CA and did most of the paperwork on my computer. It was pretty easy, and I booked an apt at the PS Library. That took about 30 mins. Asked the guy if they'd been affected. Not yet.
Trying to get a realID and it’s impossible. There are no appointments. I was thinking of trying for a passport next but I am concerned about the wait time on that too
Me too, I just applied for a new passport. I'm not traveling until the end of June but hopefully it won't take that long. Although with Trump screwing up everything, you never know.
I renewed mine online about 6 weeks ago. It came in the mail within 2 weeks. I applied in person for the kids a few weeks ago and still waiting. Good luck!
I did it for a minor, so like a new application, and had to go in person for document submission. No issues, faster than expected. Somehow though I doubt it will stay this easy for long.
We applied for our 13yo daughter in December, & you receive it in 3 parts. We didn't expedite application. We received 2 (birth certificate and walket passport) of the 3 (actual passport still not received) returns. Also waiting on large tax return check. Says it's ready to cut, but not received.
I just renewed it last month online. I just received it last week. I figured it would have taken months. My wife renewed hers as well a couple weeks ago so waiting to see how long that takes. Next, my kids, but we all have to coordinate going to the PO.
I just renewed mine - filled out form on line, took it to post office and they made sure all was complete and put it in an envelope so it was flat with no folds. I requested expedited processing.
Application was received on March 12 and I had my new passport by March 23.
Just got my American passport renewed, received it last week. I think I submitted it online about 5 weeks ago. I was shocked it came so fast. But do it NOW.
Yes, a friend said they cancelled their appointment and would reschedule. No further news on that. It’s coming I’m sure! Look for the people in black with black masks coming for us, too!
It's not as hard as you would think
Passport application form
ID and copy of ID
Copy of birth certificate (or old passport)
Passport fees
Passport photo.
I got all my copies taken care of at the library, and most offices will take photos there day of for you.
No, but...
On Nov 7, for no particular reason🤥, I visited our county clerk's office with my expired passport & requested expedited processing.
New passport arrived 11/16.
Gives me hope. Mine is expired (and has been for a few years now), but both the county clerk's office and my local library offer passport "renewal" services. I have to call to ask for info and required paperwork. (That could be a problem since I moved and misplaced original birth certificate!)
Go for it! I was in the same shape (& had been discouraged by the procedure at USPS).
Ordered my birth certificate online from that county/state.
Best of luck to you🤞🏼
My dad was in the Air Force, so I was born in El Paso, Texas, before he and Mom came home to PA. I was surprised at how easy it was to get a replacement birth certificate from Texas, given the attitude about "illegals" down there!
A friend sent in a new application about 10 days ago, got a confirmation email today. Supposed to be 2-4 weeks before she gets it. But that's if their old auto-generated emails are still correct.
Last summer (2024) I happened to be in 2 different post offices and overhear family groups told their passport appointment was canceled. They’d taken off work, gathered their kids & all documents, only to learn they’d need to gamble on another appointment or online.
PLEASE, PLEASE everyone- apply for your passport immediately!!! If this executive order gets any traction, Congress will push H. R. 22, then our right to vote will be dictated through exec, and Congress leaving only Judiciary to fight it. Ladies especially!!!!
To get my driver's license after moving to a new state, I needed my birth certificate and marriage license to prove my last name but could not locate either document. It took a couple of months to request and recieve copies of documents. Same will be needed to vote if this is passed. Prepare now.
True...and as a married woman, your name will not match your CERTIFIED birth certificate. A marriage license is not currently on the list of "accepted" documents. In some red states, you must have your ex's permission to take back your name.
I mailed my application to the Embassy in Paris on March 21. (That’s the only way to renew for expats in France.) I got an email on March 23 from the passport agency in the US saying they received my application and documents, and on the 25th they emailed again to say my passport was mailed.
Renewed, no. But I got my daughter one…and almost every parent of a female child I teach has recently gotten a passport for their child. We know what’s coming and we are terrified.
Can you share more about the reasons why these parents were compelled to be prepared in this way? Curious about what parents are thinking in other parts of the country. I’m in Texas.
I renewed mine right after the election eventhough I had 4 years remaining on it because I was worried the process may become FUBAR. I used FedEX expedited. Expensive but the speed and tracking was worth it.
I made an appointment at a local PO with a 3 week wait time. Appointment last week. Email from the state department acknowledging receipt of my application and estimating a 4-6 week turnaround. I would recommend applying or renewing ASAP before staff reductions slow the process.
I got mine right before the inauguration. It took 3 weeks with expedited shipping. I worry about what it is now. Same with social security, the VA, Medicaid etc.
The applications at the post office were being reprinted to only allow sex choices to be male or female now. What a waste of $$ for such a silly thing.
i let my passport lapse, because i became mobility disabled and figured my flying days were over. but now emergency exit looms and i may need to fly, even if i don’t think my body is up for it. sad times in the usa.
Yes - recommend using OPR(Online passport renewal) if you’re not expecting to travel soon. It took exactly 4 weeks (Feb-Mar).
If you have travel, recommend you go in person and request expedited which is expensive, but guaranteed. This is definitely one of the services I’m most concerned about.
It's been a year since we renewed ours. Expected to spend full day in line at post office BUT found out that we could go to our County Register of Deeds. No appointment needed. Added small fee to cost. They took photo. In & out in about an hour.
Applied to new one as old was out of renewal period early Feb. Appointments at post offices to submit new are really getting pushed out. I got my passport this past week but didn’t get my original documents submitted back til today.
We need to renew our passports. However, we are procrastinating bcuz who knows how any updated data will be used by the Mysk🐀🐀 now. And what happens to USa stolen databases when they finally leave. Any suggestions?
My husband and I did ours online. Didn’t want to give up our physical ones in fear that we might never get new ones. Painless process with a two week turn around time!
I just applied for one my first ever last week . With expedited delivery and insurance. Approval and paperwork in my inbox overnight. I made an appointment with my library to have to have it mailed in.
I applied for my 1st passport at 64 yrs old last week. Only 1 woman works in passport applications in main branch of post office in Lexington KY. Said they let everyone go when covid hit and never hired anyone back.
**Update: Let’s just say the “waiting for the next customer rep is less than 3 hours” certainly gave me pause BUT, put it on speaker phone & finished planting in my flower beds, cleaned the deck, porch & patio for m 3yr-old grandson’s BDay party here tomorrow & 4 hours later- NOTHING! 😡
Dont let your passport expire!!! If you do, you have to go into a passport office with a birth certificate, picture ID (like it's not on your old passport), and whatever else they want at the moment. Still online and shows 4-6 weeks. https://www.usa.gov/renew-adult-passport
I renewed online in Jan before inauguration and it was very smooth except for my photo (taken at Walgreens) being rejected. I went and got a new one taken at CVS and had my new passport in less than a few weeks.
Yes, a friend’s daughter who’s an American citizen had her passport confiscated and all documents when she went in to renew her passport. No explanation, just confiscated.
That’s all they know. They were given no rationale as to why all her documents (birth certificate, drivers license, old passport) were taken. They were told the documents would need further review. That was it
I was worried about this as well, but I was able to get both my kids first time passports in around 4 weeks. We are still waiting to get their birth certificates back though. 😬
Currently in the process through an online service. Truthfully, had I known then what I know now, I wouldn't have used the organization that I have. I am waiting for them to send my finished paperwork for mailing to government. Glad I'm not in a hurry.
My husband and I need to renew. There’s a question on the renewal about if you’re married. Really in a quandary as to whether or not we should answer this question truthfully.
Why wouldn’t you answer truthfully? Has your marital status changed since you got your current passport? It is not recommended to create a reason to be disqualified by committing perjury.
No, but same sex marriage is on the chopping block. We were registered domestic partners in Washington, but they converted all those registrations to marriages a few years back. It’s complicated. We had an issue coming back from Canada a couple of years ago before the US recognized us.
I see. I kept my birth name when I married. For me, that had been my ID for 40 years, still is. Sometimes I am addressed by my husband’s name: that’s not me. Understandable that you don’t want to draw attention at this time. I’m sorry this is a worry for you. Crazy. Oppressive. Wasted energy.
It won't be your marriage that will be a problem. It's only if you changed your name from your birth name that will be a problem. They are after trans people and the proposed SAVE act would keep you from registering to vote if you changed your name.
Yep. They are trying to disenfranchise anyone who changed their name from their birth certificate. So, if you're a woman who changed her name to her husband's upon her marriage, she had better change it back to be eligible to vote.
I did. I sent it in in January and to my complete shock I not only got it back I got it back in 10 days. I expected problems. I did it before he was sworn in. May be all jacked up now
I just renewed earlier this month. I was concerned about delays too, but was pleasantly surprised how quickly they turned it around (about two weeks!).
My Congresswoman Shontel Brown held a passport registration event in our district. I applied and my application was submitted on 3/13. Was told it would take 4 to 6 weeks. Fingers crossed 🤞!
We just renewed mine and got new ones for my kids 2 weeks ago. Did it at the Chicago Passport Office. They were very professional and got them done same day.
You can only do this if you meet certain criteria. I would if I could. Mine expires in late 2026, so hopefully I Sept 2025 the state dept still exists.
I have that same situation. State dept reps at Travel Show said online requires to be within the year. If you mail it in, they will process, as long as its at least 5 years old.
Yes, but by mail. You have 5 years after it expires to renew it by mail. If more than that, you need to go to the office. I got an email saying it will take 6 weeks.
Yes - it was a zoo at the passport acceptance facility (we had to do my kids in person). Literally standing room only with lines out the door. We went with standard vs. expedited for a trip the end of June - really hope that won’t come back to bite us.
I submitted my online renewal in 3/18 and it arrived in the mail today. The official notification said 4-6 weeks plus 1-2 weeks for regular mail, so I was very surprised to received it in nine days. Also, I received email updates as the renewal was progressing through the steps. Very smooth.
Mailed my renewal application in mid-February, department received it four days later. My new passport arrived a day over four weeks later (average processing is 4 to 6 weeks.) I was pleasantly surprised!
My family all just got our first passports and we paid for expedited because we were worried about the impact from the cuts and wanted it done ASAP. We just got them in the mail today and our appointment to submit was 2 weeks ago. Waiting for the 1st appointment was longer than the gov process.
Renewed my almost 5 year old’s passport in late January/early February and received it in about 5 weeks. Passport arrived by stealth from Arkansas (it was “moving through network” for more than a week before it was delivered).
I mailed my renewal request along with my old passport in early February. I was really anxious about it but it did come in about three weeks. I suspect as time passes, that too will become much more difficult.
We recently renewed both of our pp, my husband and I, through the portal and received our passports without issue. My next step is to get my RealId, which seems to be harder to get than a passport.
Once you have a passport, Real ID isn't hard at all. You'll need the passport plus proof of residence (such as utility bill in your name, mortgage payment, real estate tax bill in your name).
No, but I can tell you that a first class pkg via USPS used to take 3 days to get from NC to NM. Package I sent last Thursday arrived in Albuquerque today. Seven days. Get ready people.
And since this administration is limiting valid IDs, will this lead to longer wait times for new passports? I think we need a consolidated effort to help folks get their paperwork, whether a passport, etc. Are there organizations that do this now? Would be interested in supporting them.
Renewed online in early March and received a couple of weeks later. Once in process the current passport is nullified. Mine did not have 6 months on it which I thought would affect it but the process was quick.
My son. So I had to submit all the documents. It been “in process” for over a month, and they aren’t emailing updates at all. The check cleared quickly though.
I renewed my son's passport right after the election election was Tuesday I made the appointment on Wednesday we had the appointment on Friday and it was back inside my hands inside of about 2 weeks- but again, this was back in November.
That's why I made sure to renew mine last year. I might need it. This can't go on for four years, surely. It's been just over 2 months and even Canada hates us! Canada doesn't hate anyone. ;(
I am going to cuz it expires in June. I’m going to do it electronically so I can keep the old one. It’s not valid once you apply for new one but in this environment I may never get a new one!
Important!! If your married name and your birth certificate don’t match and Congress passes the SAVE Act, you won’t be able to vote without a passport. Another voter suppression tactic.
Having the foresight renewing my US Passport BEFORE 1/17/2025 was an awesome blessing: I received my new passport around 2/10/2025 and the Passport ID Card arrived later on 2/27/2025.
I checked with the USPS Passport Rep—the Passport ID Card was egregiously delayed for no apparent reason.
Hubby has his coming up in May. I’ll let you know. I do know that my mom is now officially legally blind, but getting that paperwork through SS online is frightening.
I applied for renewal of Irish passport on 13 December, 2024. It arrived from Dublin to NYC on 15 December. It did not reach me (REGISTERED MAIL!) until Jan. 2, 2025. Louis DeJoy is thankfully gone, but he screwed up the P.O. mightily--- which was his mission when Orange Doink appointed him.
Now, Orange Disgrace seems to want to privatize the P.O., putting it under Commerce Dept. It's been said, though maybe not done...YET. Absolutely dreadfully smelly idea.
If you're trans & need an updated one, depending on your state, can't get one. If you're trans & need a gender marker changed, same as above. If you're enby like me & need an x marker, they've completely done away w/ that altogether. They came for us & historically, yall's turn's coming. 🤬

Application was received on March 12 and I had my new passport by March 23.
If demand goes down they raise the price to increase their revenue.
If demand goes up they raise the price to increase their revenue.

But good topic to
Bring up
Still waiting on a second one.
Social change, no problem 10yrs ago. I moved my maiden name to replace my middle name and took my hubs last name.
Dmv says get passport changed, passport says get license changed😤
Good luck!
actually received it within a month...maybe I got lucky!
I went thru a name change and need to get my passport fixed.
I don't think I'll be able to at this point.
🏳️🌈
I also did it online last year, it took a week!!! Shocked!!!
I’m sure all that is gone now
