Rather than pedestrianise Oxford Street, pedestrianise Soho. And Covent Garden. And Fitzrovia. And Marylebone. Leave the big ugly roads with busses as big ugly roads with busses, shift the people to the far nicer backstreets.

I mean, I would rather they pedestrianise out to the north circular, but “Don’t do this planned good thing that may happen, do this entirely hypothetical, in no way planned or costed thing that will absolutely 100% definitely not happen” is never really a plan.

But in the absence of a grand pedestrianisation plan (personally I'd say Zones 1-2) I'm not sure it *is* a good thing. Oxford Street's a hole. Keep it that way, and save the surrounding streets. It's one of the few roads in central London wide enough to take lots of busses. More useful than shops.

I've been there a couple of times, but it's certainly not a top tourist destination visitors. Slightly larger branches of chain stores you'd find in any decent sized UK town, plus dodgy sweet shops, and chocked with traffic. I don't know what it is the British have against pedestrian zones!

It's mostly London that resists it tbh. I can think of lots of British towns and cities that have pedestrianised roads in the centre, including the one I live in. Much of Liverpool and Manchester have gone this way, and Oxford is vastly improved from how it was in the 90s.
