Hey ALA, I am a page at a library. Over the last many years I have seen page hours diminished, our numbers decreased, our work load increased, a snobbish attitude from admin directed toward us & our job duties which is detrimental to all in branch jobs. Please do something about these trends.
Pages do much of the physical work of keeping libraries running & the job is just as important as associates & assistants. There is a lack of equity in the job, and we are treated lesser like retail workers are wrongfully treated as lesser. Libraries should be better than this, set better examples.
Tell my local library the time to change book ordering protocols is after they tell the menbership that is going to happen. Now I can’t set foot in a library or order books. I used to read a book a day. I used to have a safe soace. The library took that awat from me. Not the nazis.
FYI my late dad Euclid “Ed” Peltier founded the audiovisual department of the Boston Public Library in 1950 & was kind of a big deal in the ALA up to his retirement in 1990.
Setting my intention. Going tomorrow and I will check out physical books after a hike in a nearby state park before pickleball courts and a golf course are created.
