This comment does not address the fact that ALL of the people who have dropped WaPo and NYT subscriptions had been paying. We didn’t leave because of the subscription prices, we left because of the bias in editorial choices. And Substack in its current form is not a sustainable alternative.

Unfortunately the subscriptions at the NYtimes, wall st journal, financial times etc are very pricey - I suspect that the amount they charge discourages people from subscribing to multiple papers

I give some money to ProPublica. I used to donate to KERA (my NPR affiliate) and I had a WaPo subscription, but, well, they failed the test of the first Convicted Felon Donald Trump administration and I don’t see them doing better this time.

I have no problem with paying for digital media, and have many subs. What I need solved is that I’m not going to pay for a single article from the Des Moines Register and the Louisville Courier Journal and 20 others. I want a sub that gives me 30 articles/month and pays out according to what I read.

This. Or allow users to pay a small price for a single article. The system now means the media gets no revenue as I will not buy a subs for a paper across the country. If I could purchase individual articles at least they would get some revenue and I would get the info I’m interested in reading.

i try not to whine about it but honestly? if someone posts links to a lot of paywalled stuff, i'm likely to mute their account.

i'm poor + already paying a lot just to get on the internet - it's like a newsstand charging admission, then getting angry when no one buys anything.

There needs to be a better price structure for support - I can't start a membership for the once per year I want to read an article from some local register.

Also ... I feel pretty backstabbed by NYT and WaPo, both of whom I supported until they caved in various ways to right-wing pressure.
