I live in Nebraska this is Pete Ricketts personal empire. The guy bought his governorship then installed his successor & bought a senate seat. Rampant corruption to enrich wealthy land owners or giant corps is the name of the game here. Gov Pillen had a kid die on his property and it got covered up.

I feel like this has already happened, and in a big way?? Google Stadia was a product that made no real sense outside of Google having surplus data-centre capacity to sell. And the "A.I Revolution" similarly involves foisting an underdeveloped/unwanted product that consumes spare computer power.

theloraxian is right that these companies do invest in things like RECs and VPPAs to source clean electricity. the problem is that their demand is so large that grids have to procure cheap dirty power to keep up with total demand of everyone.

I was part of a project in 2024 that explored collective VPPA procurement for a group of companies in my state. The group employs thousands of workers who make real goods and provide real services to people. It was wild to see our power needs compared to datacenters built in the state.

There's also the fact that the 2022 IRP - a plan updated every 3 years to forecast power needs in the state - was so wrong that the PSC had to issue an update last year, almost entirely thanks to these fucking datacenters.
