TMBG: Saw in Prospect Park, w/ toddler niece & nephew up on our shoulders. My bff Archie was there too but only for a few min. A couple yrs later, Broadway intermission, I’m holding nephew aloft so he can use a urinal & midstream he says, “Hey Uncle David. Remember when we met your friend Archie?”

I saw them once at a free show on the steps of a museum in DC and John McCrea sang the entire set off rhythm, presumably to stop the crowd from singing along. It didn’t work, the crowd sang anyway, but it did paint him as a gigantic tool

I once had a 4th of July cookout at my place and one of my friends brought an old neighbor buddy of hers along - it was Xan McCurdy, the guitarist for Cake. He's nice but shy.

The three of us were the only ones there who knew about his job. My wife was annoyed that I didn't tell her at the time.

Fountains of Wayne played an absolutely disastrous show in my college's practice gym during my freshman year, during which both the band and the entire audience were drunk and yelling at each other. I cannot imagine a better way to have seen them.

They're New Orleans locals, and their oeuvre is this bizarre mix of deeply melancholy breakup songs and "Fred's gonna break two sets of drumsticks playing this live."

Their post-Katrina song "The Avenue" is achingly soulful.

Cowboy Mouth was such a fun band. Saw them a bunch in college and my early 20s and have had tinnitus in my right ear since one of their shows at the House of Blues in Chicago in 1998. A fun lasting souvenir.
