Someone once told me the point of college/grad lectures/seminars is not actually to learn any set of facts but rather for someone else to model their unique relation to knowledge itself such that you might take the bits and pieces that are helpful for building your own. I’ve always liked that idea.

When I was an undergrad a long time ago, I took a history course with a famous (now dead) Russian studies professor. He was that kind of brilliant, rambly lecturer whose asides eventually became the whole subject of the lecture. He bounced around the stage gleeful and chaotic.
