He was rarely transcendent, but as Doc Holliday in Tombstone he cross-levitated his boundaries. It isn't to say the character, the script, or the movie was transcendent.

When Kilmer was in the frame, you could not take your eyes off him in that film. His lines were pitch perfect, sweet ambrosia.

What Top Secret and Airplane did was more effective as they spoofed a genre and its cliches and archetypes, not limited to a specific movie. And What makes them work is the actors all play it straight. Val was an inspired casting choice.
