Computers and phones used to make way less ridiculous grammar suggestions. I swear the people who develop operating systems and word processing nowadays are functionally illiterate.

not only that, but at least for the iphone, the autocorrect can be hell to work with. half the time if you go back to fix a word that it ‘corrected’ for you, if you hit the space bar or put other inputs in, it’ll ‘correct’ it for you again.
i agree. i use linux on my home pc and libre office is easy to work with. on the occasions that i work with microsoft office, i feel like it just tries to get in the way sometimes. it’s like, come on, i’m just using a word processor and making quick and dirty posters, it shouldn’t be this hard.
Right? If you're not careful, you'll end up writing multiple words you didn't intend to in a fairly short message. This really drives me up the wall sometimes.
I think Frank is on to something. Grammar checkers used to be rule based, which made for solid corrections. Now they plug in AI models, and the latter aren't programmed, but learn patterns from being trained on texts. Their output is stochastic and they can make stupid mistakes.
It's a neural network that has been trained to recognize patterns. The basic concepts were developed decades ago. But, like the rise of CGI, it was the speed and availability of processing power, as well as the amount of online content used to train the systems*, that was the true breakthrough.**
*The legality of using the products of human writers and artists without permission, attribution, or compensation is, to use a popular weasel word, controversial.
**And, just as the use of CGI in video games drove the development of dedicated Graphic Processors, the ubiquity of predictive AI means new phones and computers have a dedicated AI processor in addition to the traditional CPU and the GPU.
I wonder if its because they're better they're doing worse.
