you’re not a refugee, twitter is not a country, you don’t have to fight to make it better, you can let twitter implode, you can just use another platform like this one, it’s a good thing to not engage with the nazi website forum

10/10 can confirm. We have one-fifth of our Twitter follower numbers here (so far!) but literally 1000x times more engagement & interaction with followers than on Twitter.
also we already went through the growing pains of explaining why it’s not cool to call yourself a refugee when you mean “I made a new account on a different social media platform,” please just be normal and stop saying it thx
also you are not “ceding territory” to elon by leaving twitter, it is simply not that serious, everyone should leave twitter because you are not immune to propaganda and you are not immune to the toll that interacting with nazis will take on your mental health
Elon bought Twitter specifically in order to buy the election. Since that worked he’s now using it to gin up targeted hatred and justify planned forms of oppression.
If the worry is about fighting misinformation, more people watch Fox news or another channel owned by Murdoch every day than have ever used twitter at it's height, staying changes no minds
A fun thing is now I have a 2024 metaphor to describe what MySpace was like in its last days (though MySpace is still trying, and fizzled for less tragic reasons.)
I think the experiences of an actual refugee are so alien to most Americans that it's hard to think about it.
It seems crass, but I think moral behavior is a matter of practice, so if people can practice thinking about "refugees" in a positive way, it's easier to do the same with the real thing.
and we will block and report them and if you’re new here, you’ll probably be surprised by how effective the moderation tools here are in comparison to twitter, and you’ll be happy to see that the community frequently advocates for more/better tools
okay but the point of my post is that we shouldn’t use words that have meaning to real people who are displaced by war and violence to describe our social media use

i was agreeing that continuing to use X is an exercise in futility
I'm doing a great job at not being reactionary like I got used to on Twitter but somehow THAT'S the thing I can't ignore 🤣
its so far from being on the same level of seriousness jfc
But I think online personas are a big part of people's identities, maybe it's not as absurd as it sounds.
If it helps people identify with refugees, it could be a good thing.
