I think someone sniping from the sidelines isn't the shooting kind, ie it's not a metaphor, but literal.
It's like accusing people of being political.
All sniping she does, by definition, is from the sidelines. Can't imagine that Labour would accept a defection to facilitate some non-sideline sniping.
I suspect that’s what’s meant here.
I know it isn’t a cliché, however, it drives me mad when they say “let me be clear” before either lying or being very unclear. They all seem to do it.
