Both the books (with Ziblatt) end on this weird hopeful note that is completely unsupported by everything else in the book. Almost like it was a publisher demand.
Dear 25 Republicans: you have a better chance to survive (literally and politically) by defecting to the Dem side for double impeachment and sanity. Do it quickly.
There must be ways to stop this.
This must be stopped.
There is not much time left to prevent things from becoming irreparable.
Politely protesting is not going to be enough.
βEvery fired employee and their family is going to move into the opposition, and every group that is directly or indirectly affected by the cessation of payments.β Are we sure about that? Because one thing people really hate is admitting they were wrong.
They might hate it, but they might also continue to blame the same people that they've been blaming for their problems, even though they're obviously not to blame.
Because they were blaming those people, even though they're obviously not to blame, already.
Yep, somehow this is all going to be President Bidenβs fault, or even President Obama. Felon47βs people are currently blaming Biden for the stock market crash triggered by the Felonβs tariffs.
There's lots of scapegoats they didn't try out yet, well burn through them all before an important chunk of the population supporting the current administration changes allegiance. By then how many would've died? how many lost their jobs? And how entrenched in power would they be?
This gave me the closest feeling to what I could call "hope", because PerΓ³n was 78 when he died (same age as Trump!), but then I did the math and 78 in Human Years is 62 in Trump Years*.
It honestly did not occur to me that he would pardon the insurrectionists, issue SO MANY blatantly unconstitutional orders, let Elon run around with a wood chipper, and piss off every single one of our friends within weeks.
And yet, it's utterly unsurprising.
Which makes me wonder: what next?
Because I'm human?
I said I didn't think it would happen so quickly, not that I didn't think it would happen at all.
Re Elon, normally Congress or the Courts would thwart that kind of action.

Feeling better already.

Trump said he would pardon them. DOGE had been talking about what they wanted to do for weeks, even referencing what Elon did to Twitter.
The problem here, is the assumption of hyperbolic language when a person says the same thing multiple times.
This was not a hidden agenda. He openly spouted fascism & dictatorship plans.
He had always hated NATO and liked dictators. He praised Putin when he invaded Ukraine.
Assume the worst
1. allying with Russia and providing them with money, products, or personnel
2. Continuing to consolidate personal power in the US with purges, coercion, threats, & physical assaults
If that doesn't happen, good. But everyday the likelihood increases
