I am nonbinary. The gender that no longer officially exists in the United States. I was offered the chance to change my gender designation to "X" on my passport and driver's license in 2023. I decided not to and here's why.

I feel like the X designation was a bad move anyway. The previous admin should have simply removed the information. How many times have you been asked to identify yourself where the proper and expected answer was to show your crotch?

I wondered yesterday why passports even have gender markers, and someone told me the UN started mandating it after gender ambiguous hairstyles started being common in the 70s. (Which is worthy of its own eye roll for a lot of reasons, but may be why Biden couldn't have just removed it).

Before pictures, it helped (a bit) with identification.

Now? It's one of those things no one wants to be responsible for changing, just in case there actually is a good reason.

I've thought about this, and pictures are good enough, they should just remove gender markers from ID entirely. There is no option for X in the UK, there was a time when I might have hoped for it, but given everything going on in the world, the safety of it for travelling has concerned me.

Given the ostensible definition of sex/gender according to the Trump administration, I think we may all be non-binary: there's no way of knowing for certain what type of reproductive cells a zygote will make. That second sex chromosome only alters the probabilities; it does not provide certainty.
