Also, and parenthetically, I will note that I didn't mind the less-than-perfect de-aging of Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy because I thought it fit with the aesthetic of CLU being a poor imitation of the original

THANK YOU. I realize it was, frankly, just a limitation of the times, but it's one that a person could weave into the narrative directly without much trouble.
I just wish CLU were better written as a character, or that the whole plot of the movie were better written. I really liked the first half, but as soon as they started 'telling me' the plot it got less interesting.
Also check out twenty something flashback James Marsden in the latest episode of Paradise. You think “ well that’s what he looks like” until you see him again in his 50’s.
There’s really only one moment in the film where the de-aging wasn’t jarring, and it’s that short moment when CLU first enters Flynn’s hideout on the elevator. It’s all about the lighting. His face is lit from the bottom, which helps to hide the uncanny valley quality of the visual effect.
Part of what made it just an OK film - but what an outstanding soundtrack! Daft Punk did a great job as a followup to Wendy Carlos's sublime soundtrack to the first film.
YES! Thank you! SOOO many people argued with me when I said "he's kinda SUPPOSED to look that way, he's an imperfect, unhinged version of Flynn." I liked Tron: Legacy more than a lot of people did, apparently.
Reminds me of hearing someone talking about the early days of Pixar, possibly about or by Lasseter. The early CGI tried to be true to the laws of physics. But to be cartoon cinematic you had to ditch (some of) the laws of physics (think Wile E Coyote) and be surreal to be creatively correct.
Yes!! I’ve also felt like the lighting on Clu later on in the film (cool blues instead of the warm tones he’s introduced in) was deliberately meant to highlight his uncanny valley-esque appearance.

But you watch the trailer and he looks nothing like that. He looks like regular old old Bill Murray.
(I still readily recommend the 1990s Canadian animated show ReBoot to people over anything related to Tron or Ready Player whatever, though.)
And that soundtrack, man...WOW...
