This is a DANGEROUS thing to say about a little girl. I get sick to my stomach. This is a green light statement for predators. Saying that a child's behavior can justify the attention of a pedo? There is ZERO a child can do that should trigger perversity towards them. CEASE and desist.
My mother tongue is not English, but Dutch, and I was not aware of this connotation in English. But now something curious dawned on me. In the Dutch dialect of West Flanders, ‘snel’ (fast) is slang for handsome or attractive. It is not only used for young girls, but for women of all ages.
To all the non-AAVE speakers on this thread, especially those from other countries. This is common slang within the Black American community and not usually used in Standard American English. This is why you’ve never heard of the term, you don’t speak our dialect of English.
Thanks for this! i’ve had to explain a couple times now that if you haven’t heard it , it just may not be used in your community and in turn doesn’t apply to you.
Beg to differ. It is soooo different from what it used to be. I don't know how old you are, but I remember the 1950's - just watch a Doris Day movie and vomit.
it’s perpetuating this idea that the hyper sexualization , and abuse that happens to them is their fault , bc they were acting too grown and essentially asking for it. & in turn it’s taking blame away from the weird ass men that like little girls..not because they’re “fast” but bc they’re little.
It literally just plays into rape culture, and never placing any blame on the predatory men. It’s especially harmful when older black women call little black girls that. Adultification bias is a real problem that young black girls go through.
You hit it on the nose! Society already over sexualizes and adultifies these little girls enough. That word needs to come out of our vocabularies immediately!
I was a “tomboy” until my breasts emerged @ 12yo & light-skinned “trended”. After that every boy I’d played w/ for years wanted to “feel me up” & everyone was telling me to stop being fast or I’d end up in a home-read unwed mother’s home. One who saw it happen & saw me punch his face for it🤦🏽♀️
No fr! My grandma said that to me and that I would have a baby by the time I was 16 outta nowhere and I was like what would possess her to say that in regards to a child?? I don't fuck with her that much
No, it's not you! The women in my family are numerous but not affectionate or loving of one another so it's not you its generational trauma. I refuse to come in agreement with or project on myself or the babies coming after me. Thanks tho❤️
When I was a pre-teen, (early-to-mid-70s) a 'fast' girl meant that they would advance to the sexuality fast. I mean, the boys in 6th grade boasting how many times they had sex, not grown men, boys in 6th grade! I now understand the value of slowing way down, going age-appropriate, etc.
I don't disagree with a single thing in this post, but I did first think this was about when little kids show off how fast they can run and I was mad confused for a second 😭
Why are kids being sexualised at all? There shouldn't even be people spreading word that there's a word for it imho, that doesn't need a word and I certainly didn't need to know about it.
Push every kid outside to climb trees and hold hands. There's no downside to encouraging kids to be kids.
unfortunately the word has already been created and used wide spread for many generations now. So I think it’s important to address that it should no longer be used & honestly never should have been
"created" and "used"? I don't think spreading it is the best way to accomplish our goals when people like me have never heard of this before, and wouldn't have without social media hysteria. It's not in the dictionary yet, but early to wave a white flag, no?
it actually is in the dictionary , somebody added the definition for reference in a comment below. And as I said it’s already used very frequently and wide spread . So if you don’t know about it , then luckily this post didn’t apply to you and you’re not guilty of using the harmful word.
Yup, at this point in life, we can parse finer points on topics, but if you way back there baby I cannot educate you, the remedial classes are thataway 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Forrest man I'm not certain, but I may have made a terrible blunder. It's possible that the reference is to a girl who has been victimized, possibly assaulted, possibly even raped. If that's the reference, I have encountered it but I've never encountered the use of the word "fast".💔
Humbly I would like to ask you something. When you spoke of small girls being called fast, were you referring to abuse/rape victims? Because that puts a different light on it and it's terrible....
I read some comments and now that I understand the context I totally agree, but if you want an unrelated response I got you:
I thought you meant this literally, like don't tell little girls they run fast and it made me think about when my niece and nephew were super young. I'd play with them and
Noticed my in laws would only say my nephew was strong and my niece was so pretty so I actively tried to do the opposite and my niece and nephew had so much more fun playing a variety of ways and not being pigeon holed by gender stereotypes.
Well I would agree, and I am not denigrating your experiences, but I'm 73 and I have never in my life heard anybody call any little girl "fast". Although one of my nieces was very skilled at martial arts, she was about 10 years old and I used to tell her she was very fast. Something else, I know.
I don’t know your race , but i’d assume if you haven’t heard it often then it may not be a word that’s used a lot in your community. In mine , it’s used by nearly all ages , including and especially 50+ year olds.
Are you making this about race? Or is it a cultural thing which might not be in my experience? My father was black and my mother was ½Native ½white. And as I said, I personally had never heard such a thing. From anyone within my circles.
I was just wondering if you were from a different culture /community because it’s a very prominent phrase ive personally and seemingly a lot of other people have heard . But count yourself lucky to not have heard it used ❤️
I'd like to say this to you another way. I was blessed to be able to help raise my nieces and grandnieces; we could never have children so I was happy. Therefore I have been very sensitive and very blessed when it comes to the upbringing of girls. It's important for strength and love to rule.
I've read it, decades ago. Maybe in The Great Gatsby?
I have the impression of a 1920s flapper being called fast.
Never used it myself.

Young lady, I have heard so many horrible things in my lifetime that I don't doubt you for a moment. And I was just genuinely surprised, because I personally have never heard anyone say that. We should be more sensitive to the culture of others, I admit that and I try to remember it.

Seems kinda weird even without knowing the specifics.
Not sure I want to know the specifics tbh.

I thought it was like running fast😂
