The president's pardon power is meant to advance justice and promote national reconciliation. The increasingly scandalous abuse of the pardon power by successive presidents undermines justice and deepens divisions.

Impeaching seditionists and insurrectionists was a clear abuse of power and an impeachable offense. There are probably fewer days he didn’t commit an impeachable offense this term.
What would you think about a pardon override feature? Maybe a super-majority could vote to override pardons within a certain time frame like a max of 5 years after a pardon was issued.
"The increasingly scandalous abuse of the pardon power by successive presidents"
Can you actually name a president other than trump who's objectively abused the pardon power? I really don't think Biden pardoning his sons gun paperwork being wrong is undermining justice..
Sorry, but this "successive presidents" thing sounds like a "both-sides-ism". What's happening now is nothing like what's happened in the past. Dems are weak about going after Trump, but they've always shown an ability, even a desire, towards cannibalism (witness Jake Tapper).
There is absolutely no reason that Congress cannot adopt standards defining the pardon power so that it cannot be used in the president's self-interest.
Only as a set of suggestions which the President would still be free to ignore. The Constitution isn’t ambiguous about granting the President absolute pardon power.
Need to add pardon powers to a new constitutional amendment covering all the abuses by the current criminal regime which were never anticipated by the framers.
It's almost like we should just take away that power. Or at least require approval from all 3 branches of government. A whole pardoning process that requires review, and approval from multiple parties.
The power of the pardon worked fine - with the Justice department having a solid review process - for two centuries until America elected a despotic president and Republican Congress that won’t impeach him.
How about if America votes better and then the problem kind of fixes itself
If only. Can't convince the maga mob they didn't already "vote better." We could then rely on the existing system. But clearly power abuse has occurred. So maybe what worked fine for two centuries doesn't have enough safe guards for modern insanity. But I don't have the power to fix it either.
If pardons required the approval of all three branches on government the Chrisleys would still be pardoned and Scott Jenkins would still be pardoned and Hunter Biden would be facing 25 years in prison.
If Americans have chosen fascism that’s what they’ll get and safeguards won’t prevent it.
Didn't mean to suggest my immediate idea was the perfect solution. But we have lost our system of checks and balances. And I certainly mixed thoughts on wanting that back. But the existing pardon system clearly needs to be better as well. It needs more gates outside of presidential control.
Comparing Trump's pardon menu of bribes, along with other pardons of crooks, police-beaters, convicts, and n'er-do-wells, to Biden's pre-emptive pardoning of people that would (and now do) need protection from Trump's DOJ zombie army, undermines anything you might say from right now to eternity.
Always the everyone does it framing when Republicans are exponentially the biggest offenders by a long shot, no comparison really, but still both sides do it, yeah right.
