Here is what I’m imagining happened. Anyone who muted the thread via one of your posts was added back to the hellthread because when you deleted the post the mute got deleted with it. Does that sound right @pfrazee.com

This squares with what I’m seeing. I have successfully escaped a couple of times when an upstream post was deleted and new leaves stopped being created.

Hell threads are well loved for their chaotic nature. It's the equivalent of being in a loud party overhearing another conversation and wandering over to that. If you could voluntarily be a part of one and leave one that would be a neat feature

I presume that servers can check that the provided root is indeed to a post without its own root, and either reject with error, or fix-up before committing by following the reply link to find the real root?

And all the hellthread posts can be similarly fixed as the server controls the signing keys?

specifying the root is helpful for time complexity of displaying a thread. if you can validate a claimed root at the point of creation, you then only need to do this check once
