tl;dr it isn't "NASA" saying this, it's journalists misunderstanding a biased 1-sigma (likely false positive) detection of a chemical that is readily produced by non organic chemical processes. And the claims of carbon/dioxide are even more spurious. Please stop reading the journals confirming life.

so far they've only seen spurious signs of a unlikely presence (1 sigma after accounting for flawed methodology, 27% likely to be a false positive) Dimethyl (di)sulfide.

DMS is not a sign of life whatsoever. Even if it is present, it is readily produced by non-organic processes.

the detection is of one of those abiotic-capable compounds. And was a biased study that overestimated confidence in the detection. It's still possible it could be life but its exceedingly unlikely by many orders of magnitude. Still hoping we find life but no, we definitely don't have evidence yet.

Sample size of one is rough, though. We need to find life somewhere else just to draw some conclusions. I really hope we find something on Europa or Titan. That will make any search for extrasollar life so much less ambiguous.

exoplanet friends of mine are increeedibly doubtful of that result. the DMS production they detect would need to be 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than earths, and somehow get into the upper atmosphere

I'm with you on this so much. I'm monitoring for updates every day. Have you seen the image of how BIG it is compared to Earth. Holy crap. They also found indication of carbon, which means life-based forms of some kind. This is an astonishing development and needs to be treated as such.

sorry but that's journalists misrepresenting the facts. It's still possible, but unlikely,and nobody on earth has sufficient evidence to claim for or against the presence of life. The carbon detection is far worse than 1 sigma confidence, the DMS detection is ~1sig, DMS is not always a sign of life.

I'm 100% positive they are not there. We think we know that DMS is only made through biological processes. But we've seen it on comets and we can create it in a lab, so this is far from "proof." unfortunately it's just unconfirmed chance of having a gas which can be produced be life but also can be produced by other things. and they didn't find the gas, just signs it may be there, and the signs are not strong enough to be considerable
