frustrating part of the New Cold War is that China and the US have no overlapping sports interests where we’re competitive, dashing the potential for any “miracle on ice” type fun

Feel like the US could field a competitive figure skating team. Might need to convince some Frisby golf pros to switch over to table tennis but give it a couple of years and we can have a team of all stars 🇺🇸
China has a potential superstar women’s basketball player. Up in the air if she becomes athletic enough though. Tallest woman to ever live without a brain tumor.
Brain tumors crushing the pituitary gland causes extreme growth at times, leading to some 7’5”+ women. She doesn’t have a brain tumor which makes her the tallest woman to ever live without a brain tumor causing it.
You just have to wait until both China and USA can have competitive soccer. Even the USA Iran match in 2022 world cup was seen as of political significance.
US is usually in the top 20 of FIFA rankings. Sure, could be far better considering the size, but hard to say we suck, especially compared to China and India's results
At least for India and the US you can point to the fact that (for men specifically) interest in other sports overwhelm football, idk what is going on with Chinese football
Not something I’ve tested but two important things you need are:
- population density to have enough 23 player teams regularly compete one another
- space
I mean they probably have different reasons for being terrible. Like China, even with a massive population, is really, really old, which doesn't contribute to the people who can play football. And the US/India have other sports they prioritize. So it depends on the country
It's also ironic that a supposedly communist country is strongest in individual sports while the capitalist country is good at both team and individual sports.
