Birds are precious and beautiful animals. Reminds me of during late Spring during my late preteen years, I loved watching Crowned Night Herons with their young, fishing in the river. Here's a picture from the American Bird Conservancy.
They don't eat worms, but it's an instinctual behavior for stirring up things they do eat - algae, tiny shrimp, and microscopic water plants.
They'll also sometimes eat crabs, molluscs, and crayfish
