We have shared our lives with reaches for more than 30 years. All happy ones! These animals know the gift they were given in a forever home and gimme back unqualified love in return. I recommend it highly!
My Akita Sarge who I rescued at 13 weeks old. He's now 11years 9 months, holds 23 titles in performance, and still competing in master level scent work.
Meet Jerzy and Annie, mother and daughter. We adopted them both, aged 8 and 5 yrs old. This picture is their first day with us. An inseparable pair who gave us such great companionship and memories. Thank goodness for the hundreds of pictures we have of them.
Determine the right dog for your circumstances, once you've identified the breed:
Go online, there are plenty of bulletin boards and websites where people are devoted to getting shelter dogs to people who will love them. Even if it means getting the dog across the US to you.
Clancy on his way home after being adopted. He was scared of his own shadow. He had been neglected by his 1st owners, which probably explained a lot. 9 years later & he's still shy and scares easily but he's a big cuddle bug with me.
I’m a big fan of pet adoption. I’ve written and produced “Retrieving Roadie,” an animated comedy short inspired by how I rescued a great dog from a kill shelter and ran the gauntlet in a blizzard to reach her forever home. It premieres in May, but here’s the trailer. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/WxTxEtAamDc?si=4jEQXFd_vWvOBs90
This is 3 year old Tow Mater. He has been with us for a little over a week now and he is a perfect angel. Don’t assume there is something wrong with shelter dogs. He was trained and well cared for. It wasn’t the right time for his previous family. We are so grateful to be his forever family.
My MIL fosters senior dogs who mostly end up in care because their people have gone into LTC. She keeps them until they die a natural death and it’s the most love-full house.
I grew up with show dogs from breeders. They were no better than my rescue dogs, probably less well behaved and healthy. Wild profits in the dog trafficking business make these "bought" dogs even worse nowadays. If you do it right, it's not a money making endeavor.AND no one needs to breed dogs.
Our two girls were rescued right at the beginning of the lock down from a neighbor, whose husband was going to kill momma and her three kittens. Momma is on the left and daughter on the right.
One kitten died from traumatic injuries and I rehomed the 3rd when she was old enough.
Lucky humans. Our rescue dog took weeks to release her fear and give into the love. It took a lot of patience to build that trust, but she was worth it.
I’ve seen animals in shelters change into loved dogs and cats the moment they’re adopted into a forever home. To some people, it’s just an inexpensive way to secure a pet but to the animal, it’s a life changing event. 🥰
Our 2 girls were rescues from the neighborhood where they were dumped. We took in Libby (orange vest) in 2018, and Cali is our Covid girl from summer of 2020.
We rescued our boy five years ago. He has scars all over him, and some shotgun pellets imbedded in one ear. He was the sweetest but most terrified dog when we met him, and today he is loved, comfortable, and spoiled.
My Cookie was similar: adopted her at 11 mos- she'd already had surgeries to remove bb's, with some unable to be removed. She will forever have a scar around her neck from being tied up as a target
Have had this experience many times -- too old to do it again, but can't possibly recommend it highly enough. How many times do we get a chance to give a fellow creature this kind of happiness?
My cat is from a shelter and she is phenomenal!
It took her some time to purr but now she has a regular
motor, just my buddy.
Thanks Jessi for recommending this
Tell dogs don’t understand what’s happening when they walk out of those cages & get in the car that’s rescuing them.
And after everything, they can forgive human beings. Sometimes they are in so much trauma it takes time, care and a heap of patience & understanding just to feel safe. So forgiving💜
If people would research breeds, expenses and the responsibility of having a pet, there wouldn't be so many animals dumped in shelters and rescues. It's never the animal's fault
Our rescues have been some of the most gracious gifts in our lives. Rosie, our now 10 year old Mastiff, was rehomed 4 times before she saved us. She has learned that humans are safe again and loves to meet everyone when I walk her. Unconditional love, gratitude, and joy from her now.
I have been looking for months to adopt a "mutt" of some sort. Every time I find one, they want me to fill out a long application, with references, vet name, house visit, need a fenced in yard, and more, plus a big fee, $300 or even much more. I haven't given up, but it's been very difficult.
I know it's ❤️to fill out the application, but they just want to make sure that the pup has a good life, since it's already been through rejection and hell. Fees are sometimes high, because that's the money that they need to keep the shelter or rescue in operation. Good luck! ❤️
I understand all of that. But, it's very discouraging to keep hearing the shelters are full then not be considered because I don't have a yard and live and travel in a motor home. My dog and I traveled for 8 years together and we both loved it.
I hope you'll keep trying. I would call shelters and ask to talk to the adoption coordinator and explain your situation. They really do want the pups to end up in a loving home, and it sounds like you have that
My avatar is my son’s shelter dog and my grand dog. He had a rough time as a puppy in a home with over 10 dogs, put in shelter, rescued and returned after one week. He’s shy and scared of other dogs. Son adopted him at 8 months old. Dog is now 7 and has a forever family that loves him to pieces.
It breaks my heart, that I cannot afford and properly take care of these fur babies. Hey maybe if I sign Elon Musk petition and win some bribe money I could then adopt more than two maybe more. Thank you so much for bringing this attention 2 light.
I've been a volunteer in a no kill cat shelter since 2016 & yeah, it's a full boat all the time there. Our problem is we are continuously short staffed & it wears on us.
I brought him home this Valentine's Day. I've adopted 4 from there over the years.
I'll never understand why "animal lovers " pay for their designer pooches when there are so many beautiful animals waiting for someone to just take them in and love them
When I met Gandalf in the shelter, he was so scared of everything that he wouldn't come out of his hidey hole for anything. After he realized he was king of a new domain, I found him napping like this.
I’ve had five kitties over the past 25 years, all rescues or shelter adoptions. I adopted these two from my local shelter in 2021. Sabrina is 17 and Franklin is six.

Yes you are 😍
(As is my 1st son)
People’s natural obsession with puppies and kittens just feeds the breeding factories and leaves many pets abandoned
Real animal lovers rescue these
