Having two terms is useful. Don't get me started on Ireland the state vs Ireland the island confusion.
If there were an English parliament, they could get started on addressing all this.
Also, Englishness has become much more clearly delineated identity from Britishness, more culturally rich. It may be easier to identify with.
Northumbrian, East Anglian, Yorkshire, Cumbrian, Cornish, etc.
And it's the lack of political regionalism, actual regional democracy, that maintains that.
No one's really English. It's an empire.
Too many people in England for just one, whether it's officially UK or de facto English.
This is the source of UK identity psychodramas.
