I’m a landscape architect. This is my beef with LEED certification. Bike parking earns points but there aren’t specific design and placement requirements
What are the benefits of LEED certification? Is it greenwashing or does it come with subsidies?
I am thinking of writing a book that shows the economic benefits of bikes for the local economy. It should also include the idea of a customer-oriented certification like Yelp etc.
To the letter of the requirements (you must install x spots) with not a single f'n clue or care about the utility. There's a strip mall near me that did this to PLUS planted shrubbery on 3 sides of the block of staples
I've often encountered a similar situation. My local grocery store doesn't have outdoor cart stalls, but people don't understand that, so often the bike rack is blocked by a couple of carts. Fortunately, there's usually not too many so I can just move them myself. This would be a nightmare.
Germany is a service desert. It is not usual that a shop spend money for an employee to pack my purchases and bring them out. If that were the case, I would only shop that way. 😃
A Costco opened in my country a few years ago and I am thankful that the bike parking is very good there, but unfortunately older ones may be lacking in good bike parking. Hoping they fix it there soon 🤞🤞
Costco? Bike parking is a big blind spot for store managers every time I ride to the one in Nile’s IL there are carts or a display car parked up against the bike racks. Generally they are good about immediately fixing the situation. But not always.

Seriously! Some places not only have an old grid-style bike rack but stack everything right up against it. It's like they completely forget what they're supposed to be used for!

And to top it off, Kassel has one of only seven professors in Germany for bicycle infrastructure.
“Unfortunately” I deleted the photo because I was tired of looking at it.
Be fair. The sheer number of bike racks is ok.
Maybe it's just an operator error. 😜
Aldi, for example, makes the mistake of using the same material for the racks as for the shopping cart box and customers always confuse them.🫣
