If one wanted to train on a variety of tools and learn related skills for making things (carpentry etc), but solely as a "this might be useful knowledge in the zombie apocalypse" sense when not working a day job, what's the best approach? Community college?

Buy a couple of decent books, and set yourself the task of completing a couple of fairly simple projects. Take it steady and you will learn a huge amount very quickly. 1/2
