Never forget how she came to the Civil Rights Museum & told us completely off. How dare we let them take Beale Street from us & make it cheap! Beale Street was special, she said. No, no, no. I met Nikki at a book fair at the University of Cincinnati, sitting in a tent all alone, no one noticing her. No publicity. I was bopping by & pulled straight up, said No, it can't be. We talked uninterrupted for half an hour & after a while she smiled. Nikki, I carry your torch now.

I can remember discovering her poetry when I was a teenager. Just awe inspiring and powerful. It offered me something more witty and relational, raw—even, than wilting flowers and blowing leaves and fading sunsets. That too but so much more.
