Of the Chiefs of Staff, vice chiefs of staff, and judge advocates general of the three branches, Trump fired all the women and Black people.

Here’s what is going on. When you start firing the military’s top lawyers, that means you are getting ready to order the military to do unlawful things. Trump replaces those JAGs with men who will justify any future unlawful and unethical actions that he wants the military to do.

firing for "too much DEI" is plainly firing a woman and a Black man on the presumption only white men can be qualified. this is disgusting biogtry.

And we got finger-wagged by a New England journo "expert" for not staying in our lane and sticking to our knitting (his words) and leaving hard stuff to (paywalled) NYT and Wapo. So we were right, and we did the right thing, and we didn't need anyone's permission to make our own news decisions.

A year ago this month, Trump said he would encourage Russia to attack NATO allies and "do whatever the hell they want" unless allies paid up. We thought it was so important, we ran it on the front page of the @mississippifreepress.org at a time when the New York Times and others didn't.

My dad was tortured by the Gestapo for 4 days and thrown in a concentration camp for being in the Norwegian Resistance. Growing up, he would tell me things he learned in the Resistance. I thought, I'm never going to need this stuff. Here's some of those things #Thread

I have never been able to convey just how bad maternal health is down here in the Gulf, especially for Black women. But this @mississippitoday.org report? It does it, and I hope EVERYONE reads it. mississippitoday.org/2025/02/19/m...

Carville: USAID spent $41 billion the federal budget is 6 trillion. Actually comes to something like .014%. So take that and put it against the 6 trillion and see what you have done when your president is responsible for more federal debt than any president in the history of the United States.

Factcheck.org: After U.S. and Russian officials met in Saudi Arabia to discuss an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine, President Donald Trump made several false and misleading statements about the conflict and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ah, Mississippi. Forever open-minded.

We predictably lost this legal effort to prove that #msleg is in fact a public body subject to sunshine laws. See what I said about it in the piece. It was a victory of sorts. At least now the people know its leaders believe they don’t have to operate openly. That was a major goal of our challenge.

Pritzker: If we don’t want to repeat history, then for god’s sake, in this moment, we better be strong enough to learn from it.

Doing this after grocery shopping this week.

If I had a band or a label, I would do a punk cover of "No More Kings" from Schoolhouse Rock. And then I would gather a bunch of people to write a whole album of next-generation Schoolhouse Rock songs, with songs about Social Security and Medicaid and NOAA. I am not kidding in the least.

Because too many Americans follow very little outside our nation and choose to not believe the worst, and believe Americanism always, always beats the bad guys and wins out. We shop instead of paying attention to disturbing news and facts, generally speaking.

Wyden: "Nobody should lose sight of what happened this morning. Trump endorsed the House budget resolution. This resolution mandates that $880b in cuts come from the House Energy & Commerce Committee ... there is no plausible way to hit that target without hundreds of billions in cuts to Medicaid."

For a piece I'm working on reporting, if you're studying library science or are working in a library (especially if you're earlyish in your career), I'd love to speak about what you're hearing & experiencing right now. You can be anonymous. [email protected] or Signal rstauff.20

Is there a more bone-chilling euphemism going around right now than "re-parenting"?

“After we’ve discriminated against, deported, or disparaged all the immigrants, the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women, and minorities. Once we’ve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends… what comes next?” - Gov. JB Pritzker

"Putin cannot be trusted, he is a war criminal. He should be in prison for life, or even executed," says U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker.

Wow: City of Clarksdale, Mississippi got a court order yesterday directing a newspaper to delete an editorial criticizing city officials -- without a hearing. Here's the TRO issuing the prior restraint:

Shackled. Seeking asylum is legal. Or it was. Folks going to hell for this.

To be clear: the United States Government deployed this family to a country with substandard healthcare with the promise that help would be on the way if they ever needed it. Now, Donald Trump twice denied this woman a potentially life-saving, embassy-requested medevac.

"The U.S. government has been taken over by a clique of extremists who have embarked on a process of regime change in the world’s oldest democracy…. The arrogance on display is staggering." - Heather Cox Richardson open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Klobuchar: "My hope is my Republican colleagues in Congress start showing that kind of courage, that kind of fortitude & follow the advice of the Constitution that they are supposed to advise & consent on these nominees, like Patel, instead of simply accepting & acquiescing every step of the way"

I know a lot of horrors are unfolding, but this one, y’all. I’ve spent so much time in our national parks. We even have a passport book with stickers. Once our natural wonders are sold to highest bidder and destroyed, they’re gone forever.

Brittany Howard and Miley Cyrus doing Nothing Compares 2 U is absolutely fantastic as well as a posthumous affirmation of Sinead O'Connor #snl50

Here is my Federal Employment Termination story:

“Not often is it given to a generation to be able to change the course of events in ways that may significantly affect the future. Yet this is at once the privilege and responsibility of us who live today.” Rachel Carson writing in opposition to businesses downplaying and discrediting science. 1963.

These are the people who pretended to care about the potential that classified information could have possibly been sent over Hillary Clinton's email server and destroyed her 2016 candidacy based on that, mind you.

Heather Cox Richardson's play-by-play review of the DOJ's crisis brought on by the attempt to dismiss Mayor Adam's felony charges in exchange for mass deportation cooperation is spot on. As always, accurate and concise. @hcrichardson.bsky.social open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

These are, indeed, modern segregationists making these decisions.

Mike Pence just reposted an old article he wrote about the limitations on the powers of a president. For some reason. Here is a part of it.

The measles outbreak in Texas is reminding me of the public letter Roald Dahl wrote about losing his daughter to measles in 1962, just before the vaccine was publicly available.
