Funny how earning a PhD seems like a monumentous achievement until you are poised to achieve it, and then it feels about as worthy of bragging over as owning a nice pair of sneakers.

Something clever about journey vs destination. I dunno, the more important part is knowing your work was added to academia. The degree is just proof you did it
Things that benefit other people than you. Not to say that doing things for yourself is bad, just that if youre gonna tell it to other people, you need an excuse to not appear grandiose. Downgrading the achievment plays the role of this excuse for many people. Also, titles are objectively cool.
I hear you, but half my motivation for getting a PhD was that “Dr.” would sound funny in front of my name so now that PhD is paying off every time I introduce myself.
