Been reading through a lot of December 1860 news, and I’m gonna tell you now: Abandon the Trump voters. They’re not worth the energy. They will either convert themselves through misery or die for their beliefs.

Agreed. Trump voters' psychology is likely similar to that of those involved in the Transatlantic slave trade & those who went on to keep generations of humans in their backyards like livestock. They are neither singular nor an isolated blip in US history. They are a continuation.
I cannot say how much I resent hearing during the (usually brief) moments of walkaway how I have to be "understanding" and give them an off ramp.
No.
No, I do not need to do that to people who want to kill me.
Someone does, and they're a better person than I am.
But no. The leopards ate *your* face?
The thing is they know what the right things to say are. They can “pass” as reasonable. Come Election Day they’ll vote for him anyway and smile like they got away with something. They’re energy vampires. Cut them out!
One of the big roadblocks I keep running into is I'll point out how you can use wedges to build a coalition and I'll get back "Oh, Trump voters are a cult, they won't break from him." And yes! True! But I'm not talking about them. I'm talking about the 27% of people who didn't vote! They're gettable
They need to realize their error and reach out first, and extend their sympathy beyond themselves, Dems should welcome them when they come but begging them to come and giving them your energy is a waste of time
Speak forcefully on a matter near and dear to your base and you'll have similar success with Trump voters as coddling them and validating Trumpism without pissing off the people who are looking to you
It is a cult. To get through to people in one is much different than getting them to change a position. Read about it. It is an arduous process that requires more than most can accomplish. They are truly lost.
One salient point is that people who have de-radicalized tend to be, for better/worse, distrustful of ANY new strong positions. It's one thing to convince someone to get off the mine train to hell, it's another entirely to get them to board another cart. Energy better spent elsewhere 100%
Confirms what I’ve been thinking about ‘the thirds’: the Harris voters, the Trump voters, and the remaining third. Seems like the last group are our best bet.
The best way to appeal to that last third is with strong, unambiguous gains for the working class (M4A, decreased retirement age, more social security, lower housing costs, free or low tuition uni, fund apprenticeship programs)
And fearlessly pair it with a clear, principled ideological backbone.
Half of all people voted at all. Around quarter of people voted for Trump. There's a big pool of non Trump voters to pick and I can't figure out why this focus on getting them.
To put a finer point on it: There are committed Harris voters, committed Trump voters, and loosely tied voters (who go either way based on the last thing they heard). Committed Trump voters aren’t worth it, but some loosely tied Trump voters would be easy to peel off.
Instead, focus attention on shoring up the people who are already doing the work, or can be convinced to join. Anybody who’s checked out but is going to lose something big? That’s who you should talk to. People who are uneasy but don’t know what to do? Your new best friends.
Reminds me of a video from Boycott Friday —a wonderful woman was at Target explaining to shoppers why they shouldn’t be buying anything bc of boycott. Some didn’t know and immediately put items back.
We each, in small ways, can make a difference too.
I agree. Though I understand how Rebecca Solnit is advocating that we catch these MAGA people when the truth hits them. I get it. Maybe someone will catch them, but it won’t be me.
Exactly! #MAGAts are a minority. They never once said they needed to convert #Dems so they could get things done. They wanted us dead. 70% are against them. Ignore them. Cut them off. Do nothing to save them. We can go faster if we're not dragging their stupid bodies on our backs.
No, they’ll die because they’d rather let him break things than admit they were wrong. The Civil War killed thousands of men who knew they were beaten and yet wouldn’t admit defeat—and they took thousands of men who opposed them along the way.
When they didn't care that I would be dying for their beliefs, even though they not only knew me and had a supposed personal interest in my well being, but still chose to vote the way they did, that's when I was completely done. Fukem
Yep. I used to try logic, then shame, then bargaining (as in- if you have to vote for any Republicans nowadays, at least research what they support & go with non-Trumpers), & more.

If they realize their mistake, then they won't need to be appealed to in that way either.
And fearlessly pair it with a clear, principled ideological backbone.
That’s a lot easier than converting people who hate you!
That’s just substituting jackals for dingoes.

They just dig in deeper.
