I totally agree with this but this may also mean that this will NOT be true for some of our students and we need to make some peace with that

Absolutely. As a teacher, though, I think I’m comfortable saying my goal is to try to *get students there*. They may not be able to function that way during the space and time of my class, and I need to be realistic about that, but I need to trust other teachers to pick up where I leave off.

Pulling together enough thoughts and context to put words on paper is the entire point. Creating the writing improves the writer, the product gives some of that utility to the reader.

Yeah, one thing I plan on doing next year (on sabbatical this year) is have a very clear policy, but I also want to explain to them - ChatGPT will steal your learning right out of your hands. You can't get that back.

thus far, I've told them i will grade whatever is handed to me, so if they want to spend their tuition dollars paying me to grade AI's writing, that's their choice; i get paid (tho not a lot) regardless...but it will not make them better writers or thinkers.

Yes. Although my experience with my particular students is that plenty of them are worried about precisely this and have no shortage of shame and anger at themselves. That doesn’t always seem to translate to their behavior, though, perhaps because they’re worried about so many things at once.

Yeah , i try to address this by using SMART goals? Because otherwise the goals are vague (I want to learn everything, I want to get an A, etc.) and the shame spirals start. Specific goals seem to help them pull it outside of themselves and their self worth a little more
