Was thinking about this exact thing earlier. That in most cases the ones in managerial roles who refuse to see the work others are doing is because they are used to a culture where they don’t do very much work themselves.

Update on free speech at UVA reason.com/2025/02/20/t...

One weekend of natural dyeing. I need to pause for the rest of today, but will be back at it during the evenings this week. #DHmakes

More neat things from the @rareuva.bsky.social collections: the shiniest gilding I have ever seen in person (maybe bc its surface was curved due to looking dolloped on like puff paint?), print made from extremely tiny letterpress type (hand for scale), literary block printing:

A book history dissertation I'm excited to read when @transbookhistory.bsky.social publishes:

False option: UVA referring trans =<19 patients who are current ("if appropriate, as soon as practicable")+forcing future (all)=>"alternate private providers"... there are none locally. UVA's the major provider for much of the state; we're in the middle of hours of country, not a metropolitan area.

UVA board members conspired behind closed doors to deny gender affirming care and create doublespeak that tells us they’re doing it to give patients stability.

It’s supremely shameful for the UVa in particular to do this to a minority group

UVA Board of Visitors ban their providers from taking new <=19 patients for gender affirming care, asks them send current patients elsewhere, & takes sweeping control of UVA responses to executive orders. Virginia law protects against discrimination on the basis of gender identity. Shame.

This is absurd. The UVA Board of Visitors engaging in anticipatory obedience and framing the decision to not accept new patients as a “compassionate response.” Patients will die. I expect so much more from my alma mater — though I have never expected much from the Board.

Prisons are neither effective at nor intended for rehabilitation. (Re:bureau prepping to move trans federal prisoners into facilities by "birth sex")

i absolutely believe this is where we are headed. this has always been the playbook. sartre wrote in 1945 that they delight in their own bad faith. in 2017, andrew anglin made it the official editorial policy for his nazi blog. it’s always “just a joke,” but the punchline is actual violence.

It is mind-boggling to me that people say "but I had to comply with the fascists because otherwise there would be some cost—" NO FUCKING KIDDING. Did you think you'd never have to make a hard choice in Fascist America? That you wouldn't be asked to sacrifice someone and be rewarded for it?? JFC

AP could have been cowardly and rolled over for Trump. “We had to comply or we’d lose [funding/access/privileges]” like so many orgs are doing. It would have been easy for them to say “gulf of America” But it never stops there. They got the memo. Good job AP.

wild that UVA called in state troopers bc a few kids set up tents on the lawn but now their own board is openly defying a federal court ruling

The advice here is similar to what we've been advised by my institution. ICE has two kinds of warrants and often try to pass off administrative warrants (which aren't legally enforceable) as judicial warrants (signed by a judge), which are. Know the difference.

the whole idea that you need to "have something worth saying" before you put yourself out there or make a little page, is backwards. running a little site, like human expression, is about just being you, being dumb, being creative for no reason! there doesnt have to be a grand purpose. be stupid

We're hiring at the @digblk.bsky.social! Hiring a "Data Scientist" (very broadly defined) to collaborate on the @ccp-org.bsky.social, @douglassday.bsky.social & emerging work on Black archives & AI. Can be remote! Info: bit.ly/cbdr-ds We're reviewing apps this month. Help us spread the word?

This "limited letterpress" page & ZineBakery.com both started as projects at minimum useful to me, that I put up in case others could also use. Enjoying how that framing meant I've made their web design correspondingly delightful to me-first, ie neon, rainbow, or 90s throwback

Did some AM coding adding another tool to my very-90s "limited letterpress" page. If you're buying letterpress type that doesn't have all of A-Z, can it at least spell a few words of special interest to you? (eg "zine") Useful bc lil subsets of wood type=less $; worth it if spell frequent words:

2 nice little makerspace things this past week: leaving whiteboards in our public space always seems to attract pro-makerspace graffiti; & a small donation from a recent makerspace user wanting to thank "Scholar's Lab Makerspace student employees who were so kind and helpful" with her project 💜 +

This event earlier with @mebrett.bsky.social and @emmcg.bsky.social (emceed by Seanna Viechweg) was a great time! Stay tuned for pedagogical materials you can cite and more info on the next in the series (early in April).

We <3 all the digital pedagogy events+community-building current+alum SLabbers @walshbr.bsky.social, Seanna Viechweg, Rachel Retica have been running+their attention to full humanity of teacher+students (eg labor, care, race). Thanks @mebrett.bsky.social & @emmcg.bsky.social for yr talks yesterday!

So cool. @claudiaeberger.bsky.social is hand-dying fabric for the data quilt they're creating for @scholarslab.bsky.social! They recently blogged their initial work researching+designing data quilt layout here: scholarslab.lib.virginia.edu/blog/berger-...

This table might look dull (other than +1 for early data display): signing off what uniform items enlisting army men granted. But almost all the signatures are in the same 1 handwriting + a "his X": this is a Black Civil War unit; sigs using X bc of laws banning teaching Black people to write/read.

If you ever want to feel like a witch I recommend getting into dyeing fabric #DHmakes

This seems like it would be of interest to #DHmakes folks! tatter.org/events/craft...

I must know Boston people who are into the fiber arts... #DHmakes, maybe?

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."
