The law is best known for its role in Japanese internment, a shameful part of U.S. history for which Congress, presidents, and the courts have apologized.
Putin is a terrorist (see: Ukraine) and therefore this would immediately make Trump guilty of treason (aiding the enemies of the U.S.) which is a new impeachable offense.
The power to accuse someone of a crime without the necessity of proving it before meting out their punishment seems to these eyes the very definition of dictatorial control and tyranny.
Immigrants make our communities stronger in countless ways. The anti-immigrant rhetoric and heartless policies and practices coming from the Trump administration will only make us stronger in our support for people seeking safety and other immigrants in the U.S.” (Amnesty International.)
President Trump’s anticipated invocation of the Alien Enemies Act of 1798—which was used as the basis for Japanese internment in the 1940s—is deeply shameful. It is yet another step in his administration’s racist and cruel attack on immigrants
What he really wants and has always wanted is to order his own American Tienanmen. Then he can look himself in the mirror and say: Yep, you’re a bona fide tough guy. This is a big step in that direction.
I feel like at this point Trump is trying to elicit a violent response from anyone against him personally or the government in general so he can proclaim martial law and prevent any future elections.
@schumer.senate.gov @democrats.senate.gov luckily you cleared the CR hurdle for Trump am I right? Imagine if you would’ve slowed them down, they might not have been able to continue their plans unfettered. This is on you.
He wouldn’t have been slowed down. Even in a shutdown, essential staff still works and so do the military and immigration. Not to mention the president can issue executive orders during a shutdown. https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R47693
And as per usual, I'd definitely recommend reading @stevevladeck.bsky.social's take on it. Esp. this part: "This last point is key: even during prior declared wars, courts meaningfully scrutinized whether individuals actually *were* citizens of the countries with which we were at war..."
This #AlienEnemiesAct thing summarizes my opinion of the whole deportation thing. If they really are gang members then why isn't he putting them through actual criminal proceedings?
MS13 almost took over El Salvador because America deported a huge chunk of LA gang members and, shock of shocks, they used their American contacts to set up a massive drug/arms pipeline.
Even when guilty, deportation is just an exercise for America's racism.
Again. Governors must recall their National Guards & reassert their command & control over troops who are explicitly cited in the 2A to be a safeguard against a tyrannical national government.
He desperately wanted to pull this off with government shut down that’s why he was so fucking pissed off yesterday. not that anyone realizes that but,, that’s the truth.
Some would argue “see it didn’t matter”—
We assure you it does matter that our courts are open & gov agencies are OPEN.
Comments
No one should be surprised
They laid everything out in 900 pages and folks are still “can you believe Trump….”
Or, as Vladeck might've said during his days teaching at UT Law: this argument is all hat, no cattle.
Even when guilty, deportation is just an exercise for America's racism.
The fight needs to come from the free States.
We are not at war!
