Breaking News: The U.S. is on track for a record decline in homicides in 2023, according to FBI data, after they rose sharply during the pandemic. Many other categories of crime are also in decline.

There's nothing sinister to this, they just equate 'too much' with 'up'.

I have no clue whether the number of school shootings is up or down in 2023. None.
But I'm sure there are too many.

nationally yeah it's objectively a falsity to say crime more broadly is up, although high-level crime trends are tough to truly unpack at face-value. And frankly it's not terribly surprising it's gotten so distorted pushing a variety of impacts felt at the community level through a national lens

The NYC crime rates are down, with big drops in murder (-11.4%), rape (-10.8%), robbery (-3.6%) and burglary (-13.3%). Shooting incidents are down 24.3%.

I trust the murder stat most of all, because (as per The Wire), you can juke the stats, but you can't make bodies disappear.

I'd take this as evidence that Lester Freamon was right. Even if someone takes great pains to try to disappear a body, it is very hard to do so permanently. The mob used "cement shoes", but even those bodies often popped up after decomposition set in.

Local TV I think is more of a problem in creating a false narrative about crime. Local stations run Crime articles from their sister stations a thousand miles away and blur the lines on where it took place.

That's aboslutely true, but in recent years we have for-sure had a bunch of dubious reporting from national outlets that feed into moral panics and hysteria. The Times has a reputation as being a steady voice of reason, and so people take them at face value even when they report dishonest clickbait.

Highly visible property crime is up, though. People feel violated when the Nordstroms in the mall has their high end purses stolen for some reason, and nobody really thinks they're at risk of being murdered.

We had a literal shootout wake us up in my neighborhood on Black Friday. Broad daylight. Over 50 shots. The whole side of our condo has bullet holes and our downstairs neighbors had a bullet that went through his front window through 3 walls and through his garage into his car. It was terrifying.
