Republicans also really want to pressure all women to “physically present” a certain way - anti-trans bathroom legislation simply paves the way for harassment and violence against women and men who don’t fit some rigid physical appearance.
When they come for trans rights, they come for all of us.
Republicans fought everything everywhere. Sure they took a lot of Ls along the way, but they are also sitting on a trifecta and have a large incredibly loyal voting bloc. There’s probably a lesson there.
Because most people support bathroom laws; so showing how she’s being unquestionably victimized gets wider public to be on her side. It’s not that she complied it’s that in this case, the conservative argument falls completely flat. It demonstrates that Republicans are unquestionably the aggressors.
Im sorry no
Firstly, most ppl in fact do not want bathroom laws and secondly, if we were to adopt this mentality of waiting for complete public support, civili rights or codified gay marriage would have never happened. No step back, fight for our rights
Maybe it’s dangerous for her to protest it considering how violent those people are. Those people are the same as the J6 people. She has to be protected from them - maybe hiring a body guard would make an even better statement.
Mace is playing the victim, because McBride exists. It’s transparently obvious because McBride turned the other cheek, so that Mace continues; it appears disingenuous. No one can be angry at McBride here unless they’re fanatically transphobic. Moderates who may be transphobic are gonna be put off.
Eventually she has to, but I think it's reasonable to believe that it'll be more indicting of the Republicans if she resists basic shit like, idk, being dead named or being misgendered than bathroom bills.
IMO, her being aggressive and pushing back would just play into Mace's narrative, as righteous as her anger would be. The ones that should be speaking up against Mace right now are cis allies, particularly cis women.
Well... in school showing the other cheek just push the bully to do it harder to have a reaction from you and, for the rest of the school, to purposely ignore you.
"Most people" don't support bathroom laws, but the fact that the most prominent trans woman in government thinks it's reasonable to be forced to use a men's bathroom allows others to think the same. "She's not complaining, why are you?"
This is not true. Most people do not support bathroom laws. Cis people are sympathetic to the 'minors on hrt' fearmongering and 'men in womens sports' nonsense but the bathroom stuff is a loser issue. Conceding on it is a bad idea politically.
She was always promising to go further. This isn't McBride's fault. It might be time to try a different tact here, because not giving an inch has resulted in Trump being able to angle the issue to win an election. The tough stance about bathrooms hasn't worked. It alienates would-be supporters.
Most trans Americans know that their employers aren't going to build a separate gender neutral bathroom for them. But across the country different trans people are accepting all sorts of arrangements. McBride has been provided a facility to use. It is segregation, but it's the equitable kind.
I genuinely don't understand the bathroom frenzy. It's not like there is some genital scanner before you enter a bathroom anyway. Is there a problem with serial bathroom abuse going on?
No, research shows the majority of people assaulted are by people they know, not strangers. When bathroom stuff came up a few years ago you mainly got cis women harassed by other cis women, because they didn't feel they were "feminine" enough
This is just to hurt a minority group because they can
Obviously it's just scapegoating a minority community. Just feels insane to think that it is a major issue in any way. The way Republicans talk is like we have some epidemic of assault happening in bathrooms
Yup. They take it as acquiescence and agreement. Disgusting ghouls.
I'm a cis guy so I am loath to tell a trans person how they should go about their existence, but I think she really needs to not comply with these rules. This "high road" shit doesn't get any of us anywhere.
I’m also cis, so…🤷♀️. Isn’t this a textbook case of cis allies (House Dems) needing to stand up?
If McBride sees this as her safest path, I won’t fault her for survival. Won’t fault others for being disappointed etc. But it wouldn’t amount to ceding ground *if her colleagues defend that ground.*
Shame on reps like @sethmoulton.bsky.social who wont inform themselves out of fear of trans people! Yall stand the fuck up! Unisex bathrooms; private stalls for all! Stop peeking at peckers.
I am officially advocating for an exodus of the trans community out of the Democratic party. They're going to hold us up as shields and get more of us killed than if we make it clear we are independent and no longer with them.
They are as dangerous for the trans community as the labour party.
It’s what has happened here in the UK we got rid of our GOP only to have it replaced by an equal transphobic Dems. Don’t let them attack you without fighting back 🫶🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
Dobbs took away women's rights to bodily autonomy, and now they're telling us that not having to pee near a trans person protects "the rights of women everywhere." This is some dystopian sh#t.
Are we supposed to accept Mace's word that "she" doesn't have a penis? Shouldn't everyone be checked to make sure they are using the appropriate Capitol bathroom? Sometimes the only way to stop bullies is to make everyone suffer inconvenience from the absurdity.
This is so frustrating. Appeasement does nothing but embolden the abusers, and the majority of the abused will be random citizens who aren’t serving in Congress.
Target your anger at Democratic leadership - not the person who is the target of disinformation and harassment. It’s disgusting to see people imply a victim is at fault for attacks they didn’t ask for and have no power to stop.
Fair. You can still be mad at Sarah McBride's decision to not push back on this without blaming her though. She is 100% not at fault here, but I still disagree with how she's handling it personally.
Sure 👍🏻 calling someone a coward is where I draw the line. People have gone far beyond disagreement to blame her or demand she respond a certain way. I work with survivors and what I know to be true is that there is no “universally right” way to respond to abuse. 🤷🏼♀️
People make all these exceptions “oh she’s an elected official” — well she’s still a band new employee in a new workplace where she knows no one and has no committee assignments, staff or even an office yet. 🤷🏼♀️
This was always coming 🙄🙄🙄 There was no way Sarah “wins” this. Acting like this is somehow Sarah’s fault is so reminiscent of every attitude I hear survivors of violence face. You’re blaming the victim and it’s counter productive, where is the Dem Leadership?
smfh... this is what rolling over and playing high "noble ground does" just makes them push and dig lower tearing up the ground that had previously been gained.
I don't understand why the democrat party as a whole continues to "play by the rules" when republicans have made it clear they do not care for rules or laws and will do the most despicable things imaginable and the democrats go "oh well it would be poor form to fix that, guess it's time"
This was already going to happen anyway. They’ve been gunning for us for a long time. Sarah didn’t cause this, she’s one of the first very public victims of it.
Absolutely the wrong case. Stop blaming the victim. A past survivor is not “guilty” for not stopping a harasser/assault/rapist — that’s not how it works. Only the aggressor is responsible for their hatred.
honestly i just don't want to engage in politics ever again if this is what i have to read about for the next four years. my existence isn't a fucking debate or a cause for legislation. grow some balls ffs
I understand she has to follow the rules on the hill else she risks expulsion. She’s risked enough. Educated people need to stand the fuck up & Dems should be first. BS this is. Just BS to bow to the predators most focused on other people’s junk & I do not get it. At all.

Speaking as someone who was relentlessly bullied for elementary and middle school, ignoring them only made it worse.
Wanna know when it stopped? When i punched one back. Sure i got suspended for a day and detention afterschool, but it stopped.
This playbook isn’t working.
This is just to hurt a minority group because they can

I'm done with accepting "the big 2".
In keeping with their motto “Cause as much suffering as we can” they’re just never going to stop.
They will never stop unless made to stop.
We really are fucked.
They were always gunning for this, but she just opened the door for them.
Very needy person who can't tolerate obscurity.
