Unfortunately he was later forced into military service and fought. I don’t know the story in depth, but it’s more complicated than stubborn refusal to comply.

His refusal to salute was because the Nazis had arrested for "Crimes against the Race" when they learned he had married a Jewish woman and they had a child together.
"We need to heal!" says the man who stabbed you.
"Why won't you let us heal?" says the man who assaulted you.
"Stop being aggressive, we need healing in this time!" says the man who battered you and your family.
... These are all the same person. No healing, only consequences, please.

Both the mother and their daughter were sent to a concentration camp (from what I recall, while the mother perished, the daughter survived).
He, however, was thrown into a penal battalion for his 'crimes' and was killed in combat.
