The fact that companies can go bankupt and perhaps have to do distressed asset sales is a good reminder to be careful about giving them access to your full genetic profile. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/24/23andme-files-for-bankruptcy-anne-wojcicki-steps-down-as-ceo.html

The data they collect allows for matches with distant relatives.
Their data ops tried to assemble estimates of ethnicity and health traits from the pools of data, but this works marginal at best.
You're still a victim of the DNA hype cycle that put Elizabeth Holmes in prison for fraud.
They are marginal for estimating your ethnicity.
They are bad for estimating health traits.
There aren't other uses.
Ethnicity (then kind racists care about) is much easier to get elsewhere.
now I can buy their DNA at an auction and create clones of them to feed to my piranhas
NOW who's crazy?
IMO, People who are upset are admitting they can't read.
"Giving them access to your full genetic profile" is a product of drinking the VC koolaid.
What these tests actually test is nothing like a "full genetic profile".
Autocorrect is closer to AGI than autosomal tests are to a full sequencing.
These tests are like $25. They aren't sequencing your genome.
Even your genetics. Think about that
He technically reminds them to consider…
It shows how marketing used a person's irresistible egotistical urges to facilitate eugenics
Or is it just marked as deleted and saved? My guess is this is what happens.
Data was probably sold off ages ago
Also, are we to believe they don't have the data stored in a system users can't access?
I told you so doesn't help.
I think I blogged about this in 2007...
Never did a DNA test because I thought that was a really bad idea for people to put that out there.
It's only had 30 years.
That somebody buys your data and knows you think cilantro tastes like soap?
You think they'll form a conspiracy to sell you cilantro, or something?
Y'all think too much of yourselves. That data is worthless, clearly, since the company is bankrupt.
It is useful for genealogy, but that's not a big market, and Ancestry and FamilytreeDNA have come to dominate it.
The position of markers on an very easy to test set of a few dozen SNPs (of millions) is not in fact the full sequencing many think it is, nor can it give any useful health information.
Matching works well for genealogy though.
Maybe stop smoking?
Think before you post.
You choosing to kill yourself, and people who keep healthy are supposed to pay to fix your life..?
That's not empathy, that's a waste of money.
I’m not going to say I regret doing it bc it did help me solve some health issues and raised a serious risk for me having healthy kids but it scares me for sure.
There are way more accurate, cheaper, and more easily obtainable sources of information about you and your ethnicity, than 23andMe.
You can start a free trial account for that data here-- https://www.salesfully.com/ethnicity
That's actually a touchy subject with some people.
In another life I research genealogy.
Your DNA was already sold 15 times.
These tests are nowhere near as capable as people think they are.
And third parties who would like to use the data (think LE, ICE, DHS) won't care
These tests can't even tell what color your eyes are.
Anyone who willingly hands over their DNA is a fool
Autosomal testing (23 and Me) is pretty useless for this, but the more potent Y tests can lead to a last name.
Matching is the one thing these tests do well.
No, because I know the limits of what the profile can tell you and I know the story of Henrietta Lacks.
