I think we all have to make sacrifices to recover our Democracy. We had pay freezes at work as well. We are nonprofit human services. We don’t know when they’ll pull the funding…
Harvard should open a go fund me, ask companies and wealthy individuals to donate and ask fellow colleges to help as well. This is a fight that must be won!
May Day, May Day General Strike-5/1/25!
Shut it all down, unions wobble, airlines, manufacturing, retail, trucking, transportation, shipping! tRump, vAnts, johnson must resign.
I do not understand why a government has this much control over a private institution. Let alone a fucking school. Trump is attacking one of the oldest education institutions in the country.
I could just go look it up. I don’t really care about Harvard and maybe they should try and survive without government funding while charging kids hundreds of thousands. Don’t they have the wealthy alum too? My old school is wealthy and has no need for federal funds and still charges a shit ton.
Harvard does not "need" government funds. The government pays Harvard, not Hillsdale, for research because they have the greatest minds in the world & the US wants the best for their $. Lol.
How much medical research does Hillsdale College do for our country? Did Hillsdale college help introduce the smallpox vaccine to America? Or introduce insulin to treat diabetes? Or was that Harvard?
Harvard's endowment is bigger than any other school's, to be sure, but in many cases the endowment money is already committed -- there are strings attached to its use
Besides which, the idea is to leave the principal alone and let the interest kicked out by the endowment pay for day-to-day expenses
It's not a rainy day fund, full of unrestricted money. The money is restricted to specific initiatives like professorships, scholarships, etc. Unrestricted endowment funds are incredibly rare because donors do not like them so don't give to them. I've worked in higher ed fundraising for 16 years.
Not yet clear whether this email represents something substantially different from what was reported last month. Haven't seen details of this reported anywhere else, including The Crimson.
Harvard's austerity is normal in many public or non-elite private universities. In a bad year, they furlough, like during 2008-09 at U Maryland College Park, we got a pay cut in return for a few days off that we had to take by a certain date.
More than any university in the country at $53.2 billion. They can absolutely handle 4 years of this fight. And that is one of the main reasons the felon and his regime are nervous. Harvard can afford the fight and has the talent needed to win.
If anyone's got the dry powder for a long fight, it's them. With their endowment, they'll be able to hang on long enough to fight the inevitable change of venue to the US Federal Court on Mars, random Musk grandkid presiding. All rise.
This is the 2025 edition of all the retailers nationwide during COVID gouging consumers using COVID supply chain issues as their excuse for what they were doing. Moral bankruptcy and Harvard are like peanut butter&jelly.
One has to admire their commitment to Veritas and to standing up against the regime—alumni should donate substantially to keep the university in full working order as the legal battle persists, and Harvard University wins.
This is a very positive sign! No way they're settling soon. This is like going to the store and buying gunpowder. Sure, you don't have to use it but it certainly should give ones opponents pause
Most of a university’s endowment is contractually earmarked for certain programs/funds by the donor. It’s not like a big discretionary savings account.
There are 12 schools... FAS is the largest and core. Each school is pausing and will issue statements over the coming weeks; donations needed more than ever to keep projects going.
