don’t know who needs to hear this but empathy doesn’t require eagerness. you don’t have to be excited about helping other people, you do it because it’s right and because the alternatives are worse

Oscar Schindler was an ordinary person, not even a particularly good one in many regards. But when he saw what was happening to the Jews he felt "I had to help them. There was no choice." To me this is what makes his story so powerful. He was an ordinary person who did what he knew was right.
I’m a paraeducator so having empathy for people who are actively annoying and telling me to fuck off all day is literally my job. Developing a core of empathy for someone while always being aware of their faults is a skill I wished everyone was required to build.
