It's happening in the UK as well, with some universities dropping courses to simply get by. Many have said that mergers or closures will be next, as student numbers from abroad have dropped in recent years.

Academic careers are mostly a sacrifice that people choose out of passion for education and for research. Many academics take a pay cut to remain in academia and do what we love.
Reform that adds more struggle to an already tenuous system is not reform its intentional destruction.

Once research and lab funding cuts hit universities, unemployment there will hit local economies - even as AI means fewer literate workers are needed in other fields. University workers buy Amazon, frequent restaurants, commute in cars, rent apartments.
