Google donated alot of money to the orange man's inauguration so I've been using Duck Duck Go. We cancelled our PRIME account, which was hard because we live fulltime on the road and the Amazon pickup locations were easy.
NGL, I still have my account. Iβm curious if it is not great for business when someone purchases something and then cancels the order shortly afterward. If that was done on a massive scale with a specific Amazon produced product?
air traffic controllers, port workers and transport, alone or all together could get it done .A very few could accomplish so much VERY QUICKLY and be supported by very many( very cheaply)
I tried to cancel. Sadly they renewed my subscription in January for another year. It is seemingly impossible to speak to anyone live
Or artificial to demand refund!
Bravo. Ending Amazon will also help save the real Amazon, pushed to the brink by mass overconsumption. Focus on our biosphere. What's good locally is great globally.
Sure, but it's usually waaaay more expensive on the company's own site. I suspect that is to make it seem cheaper at their distributor's sites and I'm not going to pay their decoy price just to be nice.
I mean..a stock's price changes with news events, the kind that drive price movement are not affected by the small shift in consumer opinion it is with how huge Amazon's customer base is globally. like one gov contract crushes public opinion
*supporting local businesses* is why to boycott amazon
I canceled my prime subscription in October and havenβt purchased from Amazon since then. I was way too comfortable with the idea that I could have just about anything within 4 hours. My bank account and mood are in much better shape.
He has so much money it wouldnβt hurt him if everyone stopped. However it would cause mass layoffs of people that work there. This idea makes no sense
@bookshop-org.bsky.social is a great site to order books (including e-books now) online while also supporting your local bookstore. Digital gift cards available for use on their site, as well. https://bookshop.org/
Buy books (ebooks too) from https://Bookshop.org excellent selection and ebook interface and youβll be supporting independent booksellers. Another option: your local public library.
I do this all the time and actually find cheaper prices. Also, your purchase wonβt come in a plastic envelope or some paper thin box that looked like someone had sex with it.
Most people selling on Amazon have independent websites...as you mentioned. Plus better customer service, no chats, no bots, no AI, less hassles, less cost, all around better service and quality.
Proud of you. π You've got this. We adapt & adjust. The fear of giving it up (losing that convenience) is much worse than actually giving it up (plenty of other convenient alternatives). I replied heavily on Amazon but I quit last year & I don't miss it. At all.
Ditching Amazon implies ditching Prime Video and Prime Music as well. I need to keep working in convincing myself of doing that as I am convinced long ago of ditching anything Meta and Musk.
Also, if you want to avoid giving money to Google when you do this, scroll down past the sponsored links to get an unsponsored version of the same link. That way Google Lead Services doesn't get credit.
I personally prefer @tabforacause.bsky.social's Search for a Cause (run through Yahoo). I have mine set to Tab for Democracy at the moment. I support democracy while I support democracy π
Google became so bad that almost anything is better. Todayβs Google search is what we were going away from when they first introduced it. Donβt take this as a diss of DDG, itβs actually quite good.
I'm pretty clueless about this stuff. I've been using Ecosia, which is only actually using Bng or Google. I want to dump Chrome, but am hoping for some way to easily transfer my millions (okay, maybe a hundred) passwords... Suggestions?
I was all ready to switch to DDG full-time before realizing that users have wanted a reader mode for years and still don't have it. Might have to stick with Firefox for that.
That and Blue Origin (rockets), Washington Post; Amazon owns Whole Foods, Audible (talking books), IMDb, Zappos (shoes), MGM, Twitch (streaming), Zoox (robotaxi), Ring (doorbell), Alexa. Also contracts for Cloud Services for at least the Department of Defense. BIG BROTHER WATCHING YOU!
Good point, keeping this in mind.
Also, there's lot of stuff Amazon would not ship directly to my location (New Zealand), I bet the companies themselves might have apossible way
OK. But what if you're rural, with no retail store access, care about the environment and want to keep unnecessary vehicles, and their fuel, off the road?
There's always options. But in this case, outside of what for many is a very long drive, you're still putting vehicles on the road for possibly one or two items. All I'm saying is that everyone doesn't live in a city. Where they have easy access to what they need.
I don't care if Amazon "owns" internet, that ownership relies on our data and buying from source becomes data Amazon won't like, and more people buying from source means more data their AI will turn into decisions. He who pays says (customer is always right). #pursepower
Unfortunately with a lot of companies-can we be certain of the sources of production for every component of the item we are purchasing. I use Joom - and yes there are Chinese companies on there (but unlike others, it does tell you where the company is from - so you can be selective)?
Been boycotting them since 2015. Bezos pays more in IRS tax than I do, or he'll never get another dime from me tin. Same goes for TRUMP and Elon... by the way 90% of it is on Walmart.
Walmart is a horrible company too. The Waltons are evil, greedy scum who treat their employees like indentured servants. They game the system to avoid paying employees overtime and having to offer them health insurance.
(I don't judge people who shop Amazon or Walmart. Some have little choice.)
Where I live Walmart no lighting outside for customerβs safety but inside I have to check out myself than stop at door to check items and receipt like I stole something stop going over a year now
Been saying this for YEARS. The reason retail died is 2-fold. NO SECURITY for the people who buy 70% of the families' stuff. WOMEN. And #2, GREEDY LANDLORDS, who saw this coming, and continued to raise rents beyond what the traffic could support. NOW I only park my car in a lot with security
You are RIGHT about Walmart. To say nothing about how they enabled China to become a Superpower much sooner then they would have - throwing away our jobs, industries and technology by building plants there so they could copy what they would NEVER have known how to make. All because GREED!
π―π―
It's one of the worldβs most profitable companies, yet pays its employees slave wages. Tens of thousands of FULL-TIME Walmart employees are on Medicaid and rely on SNAP benefits to feed their families. If that's not a damning indictment of the Walton family's greed, I don't know what is.
Yeah but you are talking about people with KIDS. People who are single really cannot get medicaid or SNAP. The income limit is so low you can't qualify even on MIN Wage. I know, I don't qualify on 1480. a month SS. I can drop dead for al they care. I have saved WAY too much on WM to stop
Can confirm. I have only ever found one thing that was - only by a few bucks- cheaper on Amazon. Chose to spend the few extra bucks in order to live with myself. Otherwise, would have done without. Y'know, to be able to live with myself. #generalstrike
it's like a toddler's grasp of "activism" to imagine that consumer dollars boycotting Amazon makes a difference, with the world functioning the way it does, and Amazon Web Service
Whole Foods delivery of organic produce, Amazon's lower-than-store prices and return policy.
Been doing this since the election. Sadly my Prime membership renewed before it. So Iβll use for tv for now. But Iβve already cancelled the renewal.
This is why he hated Temu, because their products come from factory to consumer. No middleman to pay him. I purchased a pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds for 36 cents!!! No regrets...
Cheap Chinese junk stores are a problem quite on their own. The EU is currently looking for ways to curb them and annoying Jeff Bezos is't among the reasons to do so.
This has been the way I find small businesses since there isn't an easy way to find them. I also check Etsy and if they have a site listed there, I'll buy it there versus Etsy.
We should always support the small business/artist directly whenever possible.
Thatβs what started to do. I find stuff on Amazon but go directly to the vendor and purchase from them. I donβt care if I have to pay a shipping fee. FUCK JEFF BEZOS AND AMAZON
Bezos is too friendly with Trump and it's not good for corporations and government to be too cozy. Plus Bezos doesn't really give a shit about his employees or favoring made-in-USA products.
I understand, but he canβt be stupid. He needs to play the game, unfortunately. This is the power given to Trump and taken by him very rapidly and increasingly.
Besides, we live in a capitalist society, and Unions kill companies, also unfortunately. Capitalism is the lesser of the possible evils.
Sorry as a homebound person who must purchase thousands of dollars in wound care supplies yearly - Amazon is the place that delivers in small enough quantities (without exorbitant shipping fees) that I can get them from porch to house using walker. I simply cannot boycott Amazon
Over the last 5 years you can be assured I have checked out about everything. (Carewell, medical monk, vitality, allegro etc etc etc) The major issue-small enough order that I can move it while using walker without huge shipping costs/order. Only Amaz Prime is affordable for multiple small orders
She's correct. We all do what we can. I boycotted Coke, but I have chronic nausea, and it's the only thing that works. I feel guilty every time I buy it. That said, I would be totally willing to do research to see if I could find what you need elsewhere.
I really appreciate how clear and simple the instructions are; this has the power to create real change and shake up Amazon in a big way. Awesome post!
I found a part for my Jeep on eBay for a make offer price of $88 + tax that Amazon was selling for $119 lowest price.
Google Counterfeit Sparkplugs to see what posters have to say.
Most of it all: stop buying dumb shit.
Make your coffee at home, you will survive without Starbucks.
Unsubscribe from Hulu and Netflix.
Stop using google: use DuckDuckGo
Better yet, for many products on Amazon: reverse image search Alibaba to find the manufacturer and buy an unbranded βsample.β Or look for drop shipping-aware wholesalers with local warehouses. βDrop-shipβ to yourself and cut out all/most of the middlemen!
I have been doing this for years. I do not understand why people have Amazon accounts when every seller has their own website. Amazon is merely a middleman.
Haven't ordered from them since 11/5. Recently needed a very specific kitchen item that was $19 on Amazon & $7 on another site that was started almost 20 years ago by a young woman. They give money from each purchase to a charity and I'm so happy to have found a new indie company to support.
Remember Feb 28th and boycott all the stores that are feeding the beasts!! Amazon is a big one! Thanks for providing how to still support the stores without using Amazon!
I donβt have to boycott them. I havenβt bought anything from them for at least 12 years - read too many articles about their business practices ( ex.: duck duck go βAmazon, diapers, competition) - I donβt use Google either
Done and doneβ¦Capital
one has an app compares prices on products - but Iβve found many companies allow you to buy their merch on their website ie PUR water filters I can get at my grocery store and use my senior discount or I can buy direct from PUR evenβ¦
Thatβs very good advise I m cancelling my Amazon prime and looking for alternatives, I spent $6500 on Amazon last year but not any more if I canβt find what I want online I just wonβt buy it
I've been doing this successfully for a couple of months.
Breaking the 'convenience habit' feels great & is one of the best things we can do for a host of our troubles.
I am happy to wait a bit for an item.
Iβve been debating about not renewing my Prime membership this year.
How many of you have already done that? What other things can we do as protests now?
Dumped my Amazon last month when it came up for renewal. I was using Target for a very long time and even more after canceling Prime. When they changed they DEI policies I wrote them a letter saying I was not buying from them again and why. There's a nationwide economic blackout on February 28.
Have read and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. TLDR: About 3 million votes for Harris were tossed out. She actually won and he documents it. We need to COUNTER THIS SHIT!
I cancelled Prime, WAPO and the NYT. I use the Goods Unite Us app but it doesnβt provide the entire picture on a company. I stocked up on everyday essentials before the clown took office and am only spending money on food for me and the pets and home repairs. We can all stand to spend less!!
I'd thought I'd keep my Prime until it expires this summer- you can't pro-rate it, and you also can't cancel the renewal but keep the service in the meantime. But since I stopped purchasing, didn't need it anyway. *poof.* I stopped shopping WF too--easy, cuz they've been awful since AZ bought them.
And I'd say the biggest thing we can do to protest greedy unethical corporations is to CONSUME LESS! Buy 2nd hand whenever possible. Download the BUY NOTHING App (Meta-free). Use all the resources at your library. Be a conscientious consumer & vote with your wallet whenever you do need to buy stuff.
Also, for anyone interested, Iβve actually just launched an app that lets you see how corporations rank on DEI, the environment, unions, and lobbying. Iβm still filling it out, itβs a lot of work Lol but itβs available now on iOS, Android, and the Web.
This is awesome. Would be AMAZING to include military industrial profiteering & gcide support here, too - they don't deserve our $$. https://disoccupied.com/ is a great source - they keep updated rankings of thousands of global brands based on their support of equality & justice. βοΈ
I did it. And I was disabled after cancer treatment so giving up the convenience was intimidating. But you know what? It's not as hard to give it up. I still shop online for convenience (from more ethical shops) but I also support my local economy more. So glad I ditched Amazon. You can, too. π

BIG LOUD YES to supporting local businesses instead, THAT is the goal, and absolutely worth boycotting Amazon to do, not to pretend otherwise

When's the competition company dropping?
But for all websites AND it should explain the problematic side of products.
Maybe it already exists?
But with focus on ethical shopping.
You buy stuff THROUGH Amazon.
When we say on/from we make it sound like Amazon made all these products and that they are genius cause they made everything we need.
