I've been in Illinois my whole life, and most of my fam ily is in other Great Lakes states. Midwest actually managed to pass some decent bills without huge amounts of fuss and difficulty, and Pritzker is one of the few "could see electing him 2028 pres" politicians.

I did hear that Midwestern parties got their act together somewhat after 2016 thanks to the scare of that big Trump shift. So competition is still useful.

Though florida and arguably South Carolina have major issuies as well. I could see other deep south states also (Because racial polarization

means D's aren't likely to win, plus have their set of voters almost guarenteed, while there aren't many swing voters to appeal to, so little benefit to actually organizing a strong party. Competetive places like GA and NC if you include it as close enough to Deep South should see some improvement
