I remember a story from the set of Sense & Sensibility. Kate Winslet was being courted by all the Hollywood studios, and Emma Thompson went to her and said "if you go to LA and I hear you got your tits done, I'll come find you." So I think Emma Thompson happened. π
I suspect Englishness is also a factor, the attitude of English actors to the job has always seemed more realistic. Those senior mentors coming up through that environment as opposed to MOVIE STARS(TM)
Do you think there's a difference in the way the British film industry approaches child actors compared to Hollywood? Not saying that's the reason, just one notable difference from some of the other major child stars
I think the laws are a lot more firm in the UK. Child actors are permitted 2 hours a day on weekdays during term time. (a total of 12 hours a week) This is partly why stage musicals w/kids in the UK have SO many rotating casts. There are special licenses & council approved chaperones.
I think thatβs literally the answer. The adults in the cast were fiercely protective of those kids and tried to make sure they had a healthy experience.
And I think thatβs the only real answer to the problem. A critical mass of adults who give a shit. Thatβs the solution to most things, honestly.
Well Daniel Radcliffe definitely struggle for a while with alcoholism due to all the pressure and fame. But they did talk a lot in the reunion thing about how Chris Columbus just reallllly let them be kids on set
Chris Columbus interviewed the parents of all the kids he cast on order to weed out potential bad situations. He felt guilty for what happened to Macaulay Culkin and didn't want it to happen again.
