Bond needs to start late 30's so we don't get another Roger Moore at 58. Although, as a random ally, plenty of room for Hardy to do whatever weird voice he pleases, and show up for whatever movies he's able to.

Average age at first film is 38 (with Moore and Lazenby as the outliers) - early 40's is perfectly fine, but any older than that and you're probably restricting how many movies you can get.

Also, honestly, Hardy is probably too famous, and you want someone tv-famous, like a "that guy."

Night Manager also allows him to be a lot more human than a Bond movie would, I think another thing with Tom Hardy is he’s kind of “allowed”/expected to do interesting stuff in a way a lot of conventional hunks aren’t (although Pattinson has willed himself into that niche)

Kath -I am in total agreement with you; the casting does seem rather strange if you have ever known an 'A' typical spy. More likely, the person would have pizza stains half rubbed off his shirt, &certainly not like the Bond characters in the films. But suppose casting me wouldn't work all that well

I agree with you on Hardy being a great choice, but even as and older (55) Bond nut, I think a younger actor could take the physicality of the role in a new direction. Craig did that really well in Casino Royal. I grew up on Roger Moore but a younger actor may be able to do more with the role.
