Ehh, I think McConnell was responding to pressures from his base & the donors that likely would have had similar effects on a different leader. I don’t see anything indispensable about him. He knows the Senate & its procedures well, but so have many Republicans.

But Bush's first pick after Roberts wasn't Alito, it was Harriet Miers. He went to Alito because he'd offended the hard right with the Miers nomination.
